Ready Player One Trailer

Opening March 30th!

Ace Combat 7's E3 trailer showcases high-flying combat and awkward wording
Jun 17, 2018 - 6:20 AM - by Emabulator

Dick jokes! PC Gamer has the story.

People in my Twitter feed were joking about the new trailer for Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown today, saying it had the funniest opening line ever. I didn't get it. "Do you wonder what it means to be a prisoner here?" is anything but amusing. Then I found out that I was watching the wrong trailer.

The trailer on Bandai's Japanese YouTube channel (and embedded above) is narrated slightly differently: "How penal is this penal unit, you ask? This place is a shithole." The "penal" homonym launched, if not a thousand, then at least two or three snickering dick jokes.

Ace Combat 7 is an arcade flight sim that combines real (visually, at least) modern-day fighters with a fantasy world of nations at war. The new trailer expands upon the setting of the new game somewhat by explaining, indirectly, that you have been sentenced to a penal (snicker) colony, where for some reason prisoners are put behind the stick of multi-million-dollar aircraft and sent out to do battle.

Shooting the SCAR in Battlefield 4 vs Real Life
Jun 17, 2018 - 6:16 AM - by IGXGamingTV

When I was in the military, I had the opportunity to shoot and qualify on many different weapons. From the M-16A1 to the M72 LAW rocket, training on these weapons was a blast! However, I have never seen let alone shoot a SCAR in real life, so when this opportunity came up, I seized on it!

CD Projekt Red Confirms Cyberpunk 2077 Is Targeting Current-Gen Consoles
Jun 16, 2018 - 9:33 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Cyberpunk 2077 impressed with its trailer and gameplay presentation at this E3, so much so people questioned if the game is coming to current-gen consoles. We had an interview with quest designer Patrick Mills today and broached the topic, directly asking if it might not come to this console generation.

"I've heard a number of people say that," Mills said. "The current console generation is what we're aiming for. We are aiming for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and of course PC as well."

CD Projekt Red still has not announced a release window on the game, and this E3 is the first time we saw gameplay in action. While it's comforting to know this, it also doesn't rule out it coming to future consoles. We wouldn't be surprised if it was a cross-gen release.

For more on Cyberpunk 2077, check out our recent preview from its 50-minute E3 presentation.

More bad news for Telltale as ex-boss sues company
Jun 16, 2018 - 9:25 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

There's more bad news for Telltale, the company behind the Walking Dead and Minecraft: Story Mode series of adventure games, with its ex-boss suing the company.

The Marin Independent Journal reports Telltale co-founder Kevin Bruner, who became CEO in January 2015, filed the suit in late February, claiming breach of contract and other allegations.

The dispute revolves around Bruner's ousting as boss of Telltale in 2017. Bruner remained on the board, and now says the company was contractually obligated to provide him with informational support as he prepared to sell his holdings in common and preferred stock. But Telltale cut off communication. At around the same time, in September 2017, Telltale hired Peter Hawley, a former executive at the Zynga game company, as chief executive.

Bruner was then removed from the Telltale board of directors (he alleges this was done without enough stock to cast legitimate votes). According to the lawsuit: "The net effect of Bruner's alleged removal from the board of directors was that Bruner was deprived of relevant insight into the management and financial state of Telltale and the value of its shares."

Telltale's lawyers have responded, calling the suit meritless, and insisting it was filed "as an apparent means of extracting revenge on a company already under financial strain".

"The Company is now working to turn around the decline that it experienced under Plaintiff's stewardship."

Telltale had tried to defeat the lawsuit outright, but the judge decided to investigate. A case management conference is set for 17th July.

Weekend Headbanger - What are you listening to?
Jun 15, 2018 - 8:55 PM - by BeardedSonOfNel

This last Monday I drove the family out to Boulder CO. It's a 14 hour drive from my house to there. We had a blast out there, but with all of the windshield time you know music was played. The only thing the whole family could agree on was 70s rock, and that's not a bad choice.

At any rate I just got home about 30 mins. ago, and it's good to be home.

What are you listening to this weekend?

Black Ops 4 DLC Locked into a Season Pass
Jun 15, 2018 - 1:01 PM - by Evil Avatar

PC Gamer has the news that Activision plans to lock the DLC maps for Black Ops 4 behind a massive paywall.

The Call of Duty community is in an uproar over Activision's plans for Black Ops 4 DLC, which will see post-release multiplayer maps locked behind a "Black Ops Pass". The pass will include a "bonus Zombies experience" called Classified plus four more "all-new Zombies experiences," four exclusive Blackout characters, and 12 multiplayer maps. As numerous unhappy threads on the Black Ops 4 subreddit have pointed out, that's going to split the community between those who are willing to pony up for the pass, and those who are not.

"Black Ops 4 has the potential to be one of the greatest games in the franchise. Unfortunately, despite the great game it looks to be, Activision is taking a step backwards by dividing the community with a MASSIVE paywall which many can't afford," as one user, Stroook, put it.

"The community is made of of millions of people coming from different backgrounds, ages, and groups. There are youngins who can't afford to beg their parents for $15 DLC let alone a $40-50 'Black Ops Pass' [pricing of the pass hasn't been announced] on top of a $60 dollar game. There are those who can't budget enough for more than one AAA game. Many can't afford the $100 dollar paywall Activision is creating."

Pure Evil - Incredible Week
Jun 15, 2018 - 10:47 AM - by Evil Avatar

Now that E3 is over and my vacation is coming to a close, I still have a couple of days left before I return to work to binge out on video games (instead of just watching trailers for video games like Sunday/Monday/Tuesday).

Last night my Daughter and I (who is named after a Batman villain, BTW) went out to catch The Incredibles 2. It’s Incredible. The plot is a little bit on the familiar side, but the action, animation and laughs are all dialed up 1000% over the first movie. This really is a case where the sequel is better than the first film. It has been 14 years waiting and it was worth the wait. We got tons of comments from everyone at the theater who loved our matching Incredibles jerseys. (Yes, they are 10+ years old, they are from Disneyworld during the launch of the first film. We were smart and bought the kids shirts several sizes too large.)

After the thread about the Nintendo Press Conference I did go and spend my evening playing Injustice 2. Great game with just tons and tons of stuff to unlock, but I’m not that great at it. I think it really is a game where you need a fight stick to enjoy. I know several of the movies for my favorite character (Supergirl), but only seem to be able to pull them off like 50% of the time.

I also picked up a copy of Wolfenstein II from Amazon. I was hoping for a bit more from the graphics after seeing some of the gameplay videos for the Switch version that is launching soon. It’s more of the same, but not in a bad way. I may switch to another game for the rest of the weekend, I have several that remain untouched.

It was worth it again to take the week off to watch the E3 press conferences, though working nights, I was just wiped out most of the week. By the time Sony ended their press conference I was about to fall asleep, and not from the show, just from switching hours. I’m sure I will do the same next year.

Dead Or Alive 6's Director Comments On De-Emphasizing The Sexiness Of The Series
Jun 14, 2018 - 12:06 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Dead or Alive 6, which was announced last week, continues the long running fighting game series with its first new entry in six years. The series has long held the reputation of emphasizing the sexiness of its female characters, enshrined in audiences' minds as the "She kicks high" game from the Xbox launch.

With Dead or Alive 5, Team Ninja made a concerted effort to rehabilitate the series' reputation, showing the female characters as warriors first and foremost and putting the focus on the fighting. Over time, DLC for the game shifted that focus to even more revealing costumes, and KOEI Tecmo raked in the money while the community split itself over whether the game could be taken seriously in competitive or absolute terms.

Dead or Alive 6 marks another attempt by Team Ninja to put the spotlight back on the fighting and alter the perception of it from sexy to cool and mature. When we played the game at E3 this year, we spoke to Dead or Alive 6's director Yohei Shimbori about why they're making this change and whether the inevitable DLC will follow the same path as its predecessor.

"This is a work in progress, a prototype, so we might change in the future," Shimbori told us. "For this version, we still have Kasumi with her previous costumes, and there are some parts that are going to jiggle or move, but we want to make it a lot more natural. That is one goal, to make movement very natural. Also, each character has a very strong personality and we want to emphasize that.

"Of course we’re going to tone down at this point, but for downloadable content, we have to see what gamers really want, what their response is. Not all the gamers want the same thing, but we want to ask their opinions, all of them, and get feedback on it. Having said that, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, we put [sexuality] on the front line and used the soft engine [note: an engine used in DOA5 for advanced butt and breast jiggling] for that. And actually, we’re reflecting on that… maybe we did a little too much. Of course, we will have some jiggling and some movement, but as a whole we’re going to tone down.

Pure Evil - Fortnite Pro Am
Jun 13, 2018 - 8:51 AM - by Evil Avatar

I don’t play the Battle Royale mode of Fortnite myself, but I do admire it’s success. They had a whopping 2 Million people watching the streaming Pro Am tournament last night. (Ninja won. No, I don’t know who that is.)

The game is just a juggernaut. I hope they add some other multiplayer modes in the future, I could get into it then. I still love the Save the World mode, it’s a lot of fun, though I kinda stopped playing because the resource limit of 999 of each resource just doesn’t go far when you are trying to build up your base. It got too annoying to go back and forth between the city map and my base over and over.

Great game though and I love seeing Epic back on top like they were when we started EvAv.

Pure Evil - E3 Thoughts
Jun 12, 2018 - 7:15 AM - by Evil Avatar
While there is still one more Press Conference later this morning (Nintendo), E3 is pretty much over for me. The game of the show was BioWare’s Anthem for sure with a close second place for Ubisoft’s Skull & Bones.

I wasn’t that impressed with the footage of Anthem last year, it just felt kinda generic and that it was really trying too hard to be Destiny. The problem is that Destiny 2 never added up to much. The single player campaigns just re-hashed enemies and locations we have already seen and the gear was mostly ugly. Who wants to grind for ugly gear? Anthem looks like it will fix all the problems Destiny has with a better campaign and cool looking armor sets to customize and collect (Not to mention monetize, right EA?)

Skull & Bones will certainly scratch the itch left over from Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. I’m going to miss a traditional single player campaign, but it really is taking the best part of Black Flag and turning it into a whole game. You can’t go wrong with that. Plus, like Anthem you know there will be tons of items and ships to grind for and collect.

The big thing I took away from this year was that there are a TON of AAA games coming out in 2019. We still have several top titles that will be released at the end of this year (Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-Man, Battlefield V, Black Ops IIII, etc.) and the great games will just keep coming in January, February and March of next year.

After a couple of years where it felt like there wasn’t a lot of fantastic announcements, this year it seemed like every publisher had good games to announce, most of which aren’t titles that are going to get pushed off 2 or 3 years. What we are seeing this year, we will be playing before this time next year.

No matter what your platform, there is going to be TON to play. Good times.

P.S.: Runner up titles would include Dying Light 2, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Both those just stand out as titles you have to own.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Delayed to Early 2019
Jun 10, 2018 - 6:51 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

Square Enix has delayed Kingdom Hearts 3 to early 2019. It was due out later in 2018.

That's the bad news. The good news is the long-awaited Disney / Final Fantasy cross-over RPG finally has a firm release date: 29th January 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Director Tetsuya Nomura issued a statement on the delay, apologising while pointing to Square Enix's upcoming E3 media briefing:

"We've announced the release day for Kingdom Hearts 3 ahead of E3 at the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra - World Tour-. I'm sorry that we're asking for a little more time than initially planned. Please look forward to other information, including a few trailers at E3. Thank you."

Anthem Won't Have Loot Boxes But You Can Buy Cosmetics, BioWare Says
Jun 10, 2018 - 5:31 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

At EA Play to kick off E3 2018, the company closed with a deep dive into Anthem. During the interview, BioWare general manager Casey Hudson shared more details on the Javelin mech suits and customization options. But, loot boxes won't be an option.

Hudson was clear that it wouldn't be selling randomized loot boxes, but you can purchase cosmetic items a la carte. The suits come in at least four different archetypes: Ranger, Colossus, Interceptor, and Storm. Each of them performs a bit differently, and you can switch between them for any given mission.

The customization options will let you change the paint jobs and even the actual geometry of the suit. Further details weren't shared, but it sounded as if cosmetics will be available by playing the game. It's unclear at this point if there will be some skins and vanity items that you can only get by spending money.

J.J. Abrams Establishes Bad Robot Games
Jun 07, 2018 - 7:23 PM - by Evil Avatar

J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Launches Video Game Division

J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot banner has expanded into the gaming space.

Company president and COO Brian Weinstein announced Thursday that the entertainment production company has entered a strategic relationship with Tencent, the Chinese media giant, to form Bad Robot Games. The partnership will exclusively develop games by Abrams and Bad Robot, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment joining the gaming arm as a minority investor.

Bad Robot Games will partner with established developers to create large-scale and indie titles for the mobile, PC and console markets. In-house visual artists, designers and writers from Bad Robot will work on the projects.

Dave Baronoff, who has led Bad Robot’s games and interactive content creation since 2006, will head up the game division. Baronoff has worked on branded titles spun off from popular Bad Robot franchises such as Cloverfield as well as the current co-development project Spyjinx with Epic Games, ChAIR and Tencent.

“I’m a massive games fan, and increasingly envious of the amazing tools developers get to work with, and the worlds they get to play in. Now we are doubling down on our commitment to the space with a unique co-development approach to game making that allows us to focus on what we do best, and hopefully be a meaningful multiplier to our developer partners,” said Abrams. “Dave’s creativity, deep passion and skillful leadership will be incredibly valuable as we harness our partner Tencent’s expertise, experience and reach to bring our games to audiences around the world.”

Alongside Baronoff, Tim Keenan, who created the 2016 indie PC and mobile game Duskers, will serve as creative director.

Tencent, whose Tencent Games is the largest gaming company in the world by revenue and market value, will have the commercial rights to distribute all Bad Robot games released in Asia.

To answer that question we created a brand new trailer. Watch it at the top of this post, if you haven’t already.

In addition to revealing the release date, the trailer introduces two new animal threats: mountain lions, or cougars, and infected ravens – called Criers in our world. We see another ambush event as Marauders torch an old vehicle and roll it onto the highway trying to knock Deacon from his bike. And the video ends with Deacon running out of gas out in the middle of nowhere – a quiet moment, perhaps, but maybe the deadliest of all.

Most important, we introduce a new enemy human faction: Rest In Peace, or R.I.P., is a cult that worships the Freakers. Rippers, as they’re known, dress like Freakers – and kill anyone who isn’t a Ripper. While they’re important to the story, Rippers are also an important part of the in-game Freaker ecology: when you get a chance to take down a Ripper camp, try bringing in a Swarm and see what happens – Rippers refuse to kill Freakers, and the results can be very entertaining.

Also, since we’re starting to introduce more of the characters you’ll meet in Days Gone, I want to formally introduce three characters you see in this trailer, two for the first time.

William “Boozer” Gray was introduced in our first reveal trailer back in 2016, riding with Deacon on the broken road and keeping Deacon from bashing in the head of a dead Freaker. From their cuts we know they are both members – or ex members – of the Mongrels MC. So they are more than just friends — they are brothers.

Boozer is played by the immensely talented Jim Pirri. For the role of Boozer, we needed a special actor who could help us tell the story. Boozer has to be tough, cynical, and a bad ass, but his friendship and brotherhood with Deacon has to come through as well. Jim has helped turn Boozer into a compelling and very human character.

Alkai Turner (pronounced “alk-eye”) is the arms dealer at the Hotsprings survivor encampment, played by the talented Jonathan Joss.

Ada Tucker is a former prison matron who now runs the Hotsprings camp, played by the inimitable DeeDee Rescher.

These are just three of the dozens of characters you will meet throughout the Days Gone story – which we’ll be talking more about as we get closer to launch.

Oh yeah – launch date. As promised and as revealed in our new trailer, we are excited to announce the release date for Days Gone:

February 22, 2019

Fear The Wolves - E3 Trailer
Jun 07, 2018 - 11:24 AM - by Emabulator

Click on the Headline for the Trailer.

Focus Home Interactive and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. veterans at Vostok Games challenge you to survive in the new Fear the Wolves E3 trailer. Get your first glimpse at the dark setting, player vs environment elements, and endgame extraction of this unique Battle Royale FPS.

Drop into a radioactive wasteland with nothing but your wits, fists, and whatever you can find to protect you. Deadly mutated wildlife, the organic spread of radiation, unexplainable anomalies, and 99 other players stand in your way on your long march to the extraction helicopter inside the final zone.

To defend yourself you have an arsenal of scavenged weaponry. The trusty fire-axe is a silent killer but won’t do much good as the knife in a gunfight. Abandoned weaponry is scattered around the map, but you will need to scavenge from air drops, caches and radioactive areas to find the most powerful gear. Every other player will be after them too, bringing the wolves with them.

Wolves are the first of our mutants to be revealed. Roaming in packs and picking off stragglers, they have adapted to the radioactive environment and evolved into savage, decaying beasts. While on their own they pose a mere inconvenience, a pack will drain your ammo and leave you injured – or worse – if you aren’t careful. They’re just as deadly and hostile to your enemies, and how you use that will determine your survival.

As the radioactivity of an area worsens, reality begins to break down. Dangerous areas distort and enter flux as they pulse with radiation. In the early stages, the adrenaline from sprinting will stop you taking damage, but after that only gas masks and hazard suits will keep the poisonous air and deadly rays out. You are never safe, but you can be more protected than your enemies, using this advantage to access areas they can’t, to loot more and flank them.

Extraction is your ultimate goal. Rather than a slow that acalemate, Fear the Wolves challenges players to get out how they came in, with a final dash to an extraction helicopter that accepts just one occupant. The location of the extraction zone will vary game to game, forcing adaptation and rewarding intricate map knowledge. If you manage to wipe out every other player, you still take home the victory – so choose your path wisely.

Fear the Wolves comes to PC in 2018, later on consoles. Early Access begins this summer on PC.

Total War: Three Kingdoms Cao Cao In-Engine Trailer
Jun 06, 2018 - 5:48 PM - by Evil Avatar

First Look at Total War: Three Kingdoms With In-Engine Cinematic Trailer

SEGA Europe today revealed the first in-engine cinematic trailer for Total War: Three Kingdoms, the next historical title in the Total War strategy series from Creative Assembly launching in Spring 2019.

Total War: Three Kingdoms is the first Total War game to take inspiration from a romanticised version of History. Influenced by Luo Guanzhong’s 14th century historical epic ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’, it follows the dramatic lives and deeds of near-mythical warlords and their retainers in 2nd to 3rd century China as they try to unite the country under their rule and forge the next great dynasty. Revealed in this first in-game cinematic is one such leader with designs on being the one true ruler of China, the cunning strategic mastermind, Cao Cao. Bringing grand speeches, breath-taking siege battles and legendary duels to Total War: Three Kingdoms, Cao Cao will no doubt be the leader of choice for players who enjoy a “divide and conquer” approach.

In another series first, Total War: Three Kingdoms features a romanticised version of the period including generals with preternatural fighting abilities able to tackle scores of enemy troops single-handedly and heavily influence battles. However, true to the series’ legacy, the game will also feature a Classic Mode that offers a more grounded, historically authentic Total War experience. Find out more about this in our blog post.

You can follow Total war on Twitter and Facebook for more updates, and add Total War: Three Kingdoms to your Steam Wishlist .

Vampyr Reviews "excellent example of why we need more AA games"
Jun 05, 2018 - 3:50 PM - by Emabulator

RPG Fan - 89/100

In a market saturated by AAA titles, Vampyr is an . It's not the prettiest or the smoothest experience, but then again, it's really not trying to be. What Vampyr wants to do is tell the story of a newborn vampire who holds the fate of post WWI-London in his hands; the focus is on story, atmosphere, and making hard decisions that have hard consequences. Vampyr succeeds quite handily at all of this, and if that sounds like the kind of game you'd like to play, I recommend checking it out. Make sure to pace yourself, though, because every night will be long and bloody.
IGN - 7.0/10

Vampyr is a slow burn of an RPG, taking its time to ramp up its intriguing blend of science and the supernatural in an elaborately gloomy version of London. When it gets going you can see the potential of the way it offers you more power if you consume its interesting citizens. But Vampyr never commits to this idea to the point where I felt I needed to make that sacrifice to succeed in its relatively simple combat, which leaves it feeling toothless and vulnerable to having a lot of its fun sucked away by technical issues, despite its genuinely engaging story.
GamesRadar - 3.5/5

As a whole, though, there’s a good, if occasionally clunky, game here, with some really interesting ideas. That central pull of vampiric power at the expense of people’s lives and the evident consequences of all your actions is well realised. While the sense of investment in the world is strong as you run around with pockets full of drugs trying to avert disease based failure. The people you’re trying to save, or deciding to eat, are fleshed out well enough, and with enough complexity, to leave you making decisions based on what you believe, not through totting up some in-game metric. It’s a very narrative focused game with some rough edges, and a slow conversation heavy pace, but the shape overall is an enjoyable take on a gothic vampire fantasy.
GameSpot - 7/10

And yet, the credits roll on Vampyr with the realization of how seldom we see an open-world RPG experience like this, where being a citizen with a responsibility to a place and its people feels personal, even if that investment lies in who looks delicious tonight. Vampyr is certainly shaggy and rough in the technical department, but its narrative successes still make for an impactful and worthwhile experience.

Report: New Diablo Game in the Works
Jun 05, 2018 - 3:08 PM - by Emabulator

IGN has the story.

No official announcement has been made, but a new Diablo project appears to be in the works

A recently posted job listing for a dungeon artist at Blizzard has confirmed a new Diablo project is currently being worked on at the studio.

Whether that new project is for a proper Diablo IV or a new type of game from the franchise remains to be seen, as few details are provided as part of the job listing.

Blizzard, however, does hint it won't lose what makes Diablo so popular as they are looking for people who are "passionate about working on the dark gothic world of Diablo, making great games, killing millions of monsters and getting loot!"

Fallout 76: Vault 76, Release, Trailer, And More
Jun 04, 2018 - 3:45 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Bethesda has surprised fans by officially announcing the next entry in its beloved Fallout franchise, Fallout 76. After a day of online teases, it revealed the new project with a brief teaser trailer that offers some hints of what to expect and a look at its Vault 76 setting. But as Bethesda boss Todd Howard said just before it debuted, this was only meant as a tease--more is coming at E3 2018.

Still, we do know more than you might think after a single viewing. We've gone through the video a number of times and noticed a few noteworthy things. Bethesda has also confirmed the game's platforms, although there's not yet any word on a release date. That said, the company has made a habit of not announcing things far in advance, so it's reasonable to expect the wait won't be terribly long.

What Platforms Is It On?

Bethesda has confirmed Fallout 76 is being released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Unfortunately, there's no word about a Nintendo Switch release, which didn't seem out of the question after the Skyrim re-release made it to that platform. That could always be coming later, but for the time being, it's only coming to those three platforms.
Read on.
