Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Character Joker from Persona 5 Announced
Dec 07, 2018 - 9:33 AM - by Evil Avatar

Joker from Persona 5 Joins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Playable DLC Fighter

In a video that aired during The Game Awards, Nintendo revealed that Joker from the critically acclaimed Persona 5 game will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch as a playable DLC fighter. Joker is included in the first of five planned DLC packs, each containing one playable fighter, one new stage and a handful of music tracks. Each pack can be purchased for $5.99 each, but players can also purchase the Fighter’s Pass for $24.99, giving them access to all five DLC packs as they release.

The Persona games are a spinoff of the popular Shin Megami Tensei franchise, which has a long and storied history in the world of video games – with many of the games appearing on Nintendo systems. Sporting an iconic mask and a variety of weapons, Joker is the main character of Persona 5, a beloved game that won Best Role-Playing Game and was nominated for Game of the Year at last year’s The Game Awards.

The digital version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches in Nintendo eShop at 9 p.m. PT tonight (Dec. 6), with the physical version hitting stores on Dec. 7. In this massive video game crossover event, every fighter in Super Smash Bros. history is back, and they’re joined by newcomers like Daisy from the Super Mario series, Chrom from Fire Emblem, Inkling from Splatoon, Ridley and Dark Samus from Metroid, Ken from Street Fighter, Simon and Richter Belmont from Castlevania, King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong series, Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Incineroar from Pokémon, and, soon, Joker from Persona 5. Anyone who purchases and registers a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game with My Nintendo by Jan. 31, 2019, will receive Piranha Plant as a free playable fighter. With a smashing amount of content, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the biggest Super Smash Bros. game ever. For more information about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, visit smashbros.com.

“The Game Awards coupled with the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate marks one of the video game industry’s biggest nights, so it’s the ideal place to share news about one of the most anticipated games of the year,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime, who announced the Joker news to The Game Awards audience. “Even as we celebrate the best that our industry has to offer, we’re looking ahead to more excitement and surprises in 2019.”

Devil May Cry 5 Main Trailer, Xbox One Demo Launches December 7th
Dec 07, 2018 - 9:04 AM - by Evil Avatar

Jackpot! Exclusive Xbox One Demo, V character details and further game features revealed for Devil May Cry 5!

At The Game Awards in Los Angeles, Capcom and Microsoft revealed that the first Devil May Cry 5 demo will be available for download exclusively on the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X starting tomorrow, December 7th. This smokin’, sexy, stylish demo sees players assume the role of young demon hunter Nero on the streets of Red Grave City as he takes on several demons including the Mighty Goliath in the eternal battle between the forces of good and evil. Players can execute devastating attacks on enemies using Nero’s special Devil Breaker arms designed by his partner in crime and self-professed “weapons artist” Nico. Combined with melee attacks using his ‘Red Queen’ sword and the long range firepower of his ‘Blue Rose’ handgun, the power of Nero’s Devil Breaker arms make the dramatic, adrenaline-fuelled action even more thrilling. This exclusive Xbox One demo gives players their first taste of what to expect when the iconic action series Devil May Cry returns with the launch of the full game on March 8th, 2019.

Viewers of The Game Awards were also treated to the first details of the mysterious character V. V may appear weak next to Nero and Dante, but he has the ability to unleash a unique fighting style that sees him summon three different demons to assist in battle:

• Shadow – a swift, four-legged panther-like creature with savage agility that sees him change his shape into sharp blades and needles for perfectly executed close-range attacks

• Griffon – a bird-like demon possessing aerial combat skills which allows him to carry V across Red Grave City and shoot lightning bolts at enemies from up above

• Nightmare – the most powerful of V’s demons. Nightmare’s gigantic size sees him destroy enemies with just his basic attack, and he can also fire beams of light to destroy any approaching foes.

Utilizing a combination of all three demons’ powers, players can take their enemies down to the brink of death, allowing V to swing into battle and finish them off with a devastating cane attack. A brand new trailer showcasing V’s unique gameplay is available for download from the Capcom press site here.

Capcom is also pleased to confirm the return of fan-favorite Bloody Palace Mode. Coming to the game as a free update shortly after launch in April 2019, this extra quick-elimination mode pits players against hordes of fast-approaching enemies and bosses until they reach the end. Details on the Cameo System in Devil May Cry 5 were also revealed, where players’ worlds collide with other demon hunters. While online, other players can be seen making special guest appearances in the game as they battle other demons around Red Grave City – even joining in the battle in some cases. Players can rate each other’s cameos in-game by rating their gameplay “Stylish!” if they’re impressed by their SSStylish skills.

Devil May Cry 5 is coming to the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X, PlayStation 4 and PC on March 8th, 2019.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Announced for Consoles and PC
Dec 07, 2018 - 8:01 AM - by Evil Avatar

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Overview

When The Stanley Parable came out, a lot of people asked us for more endings and more content.

We told them it didn’t need more content, that it was fine just the way it was, that it already had the perfect number of endings.

What a sorry sack of lies that was.

We knew it. We knew it were lying and we did it anyway. We’ve carried that shame around with us for years, a burden weighing on every moment of every day.

Enough is enough.

It’s time to fix this, to unburden our shame. Let us give you our shame, for you to carry it around instead. We’re sick of it.

From the liars who brought you the award winning indie game The Stanley Parable comes The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, an expansion to the original game with more content, more endings, more whimsical adventures of the two best friends Stanley and The Narrator. Coming to PC and consoles in 2019.

Tastefully seasoned with the bitter remorse of having deceived so many loyal fans for so long.

But seriously, this time it’s done. No more.

Launched with high hopes but little equipment and no real plan, players are tasked with exploring, cataloguing alien flora and fauna and determining if the planet is fit for human habitation.

Time to round up a little more reserves to keep the lights on! If you would like to help support EvilAvatar.com you can use our regular Donation System through the site or you can pledge a monthly payments on Patreon.

Even a small $1 or $5 Donation on Patreon will make a big chunk in our monthly hosting costs!

A regular one-time cash donation is always welcome.

We lost one of our advertising sources last month and I haven't been pushing the Patreon much because I'm still working with my buddy to get the embroidery done for the polo shirts, but if you can afford to help now would be a great time to dig in and support the page. I've got quite a few Evil Avatar patches left, so anyone who donates during this drive -- either on Patreon or through the regular PayPal system -- I'll send you out a patch!

We have been going for 20 years and I plan to keep it up for 20 more!

Pure Evil - The Game Awards
Dec 06, 2018 - 6:19 AM - by Evil Avatar

Tonight is the online awards show The Game Awards. I don’t usually do much promotion for the show since it has been universially terrible since inception. A lot of indie developers no one cares about and awards mostly given out to whatever company is the one bankrolling the show itself.

Not to mention that the show is going to be online only in the middle of the week?

This year there should be a few decent announcements. Far Cry 5 and that Obsidian Fallout Clone as well as something from the new Avengers game a teaser for Star Wars and a new Rage trailer.

It seems like a slightly stronger lineup than previous years, but I still think the awards themselves will mostly go to titles that people didn’t care much about — because those are the companies bankrolling the show. If they changed it to The Shill Awards at least it would have the sting of honesty.

Epic Launches Digital Games Store
Dec 04, 2018 - 6:53 PM - by Evil Avatar

Announcing the Epic Games Store

For the past five years, we've been building tools enabling Epic to bring our games directly to players. We built the Epic Games launcher on PC and Mac featuring Fortnite and Unreal Engine; we built a worldwide digital commerce ecosystem supporting dozens of payment methods; and we gained great economies of scale thanks to Fortnite's growth.

As developers ourselves, we wanted two things: a store with fair economics, and a direct relationship with players. And we've heard that many of you want this too!

Soon we'll launch the Epic Games store, and begin a long journey to advance the cause of all developers. The store will launch with a hand-curated set of games on PC and Mac, then it will open up more broadly to other games and to Android and other open platforms throughout 2019.

The Epic Games store will operate on the following principles:

All Developers Earn 88%

Developers receive 88% of revenue. There are no tiers or thresholds. Epic takes 12%. And if you’re using Unreal Engine, Epic will cover the 5% engine royalty for sales on the Epic Games store, out of Epic’s 12%.

Have a Direct Relationship With Players

People who buy your games automatically subscribe to your newsfeed so you can reach them with game updates and news about upcoming releases. The newsfeed is front-and-center. You’ll also be able to reach your players through email, if they choose to share it.

Connect with Creators

YouTube content creators, Twitch streamers, bloggers, and others are at the leading edge of game discovery. The 10,000-strong Epic Games Support-A-Creator program helps you reach creators, so they can help you reach players. If you opt to participate, creators who refer players to buy your game will receive a share of the revenue that you set (tracked by code or affiliate marketing link). To jumpstart the creator economy, Epic will cover the first 5% of creator revenue-sharing for the first 24 months.

Developers Control Their Game Pages

As a developer, you control your game page and your newsfeed. There will be no store-placed ads or cross-marketing of competing games on your page, and no paid ads in search results.

All Engines Are Welcome

The Epic Games store is open to games built with any engine, and the first releases span Unreal, Unity and internal engines.

When You Succeed, We Succeed

We’ve built this store and its economic model so that Epic’s interests are aligned with your interests. Because of the high volume of Fortnite transactions, we can process store payments, serve bandwidth, and support customers very efficiently. From Epic’s 12% store fee, we’ll have a profitable business we’ll grow and reinvest in for years to come!

More details on upcoming game releases will be revealed at The Game Awards this Thursday, December 6th.

While I admire the idea of someone trying to compete with Steam, I think most people just don't want to install another digital platform on top of Steam/Origin/UPlay/Battlet.net.

Netflix Cancels Daredevil
Nov 30, 2018 - 7:44 AM - by Evil Avatar

And then there were two. Netflix has canceled Daredevil, leaving only Jessica Jones and The Punisher.

The era of Marvel TV on Netflix seems to be coming to an end at the same time Disney is revving up its own streaming service with already announced Loki and Scarlett Witch series for Disney+ coming from Marvel’s Kevin Feige led film division. For now, the upcoming new seasons of Jessica Jones and The Punisher are still currently scheduled to run on Netflix as planned, sources say.

Overall, the cancellation of the series starring Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, who had been tweeting about a forth season in the past few weeks, shows just how strained relations between Netflix and the Jeph Loeb run Marvel TV have become. A far cry from when their multi-series deal was first announced back in 2013 with big smiles and almost bigger plans.

The current state of affairs became painfully evident when the SVOD player abruptly pulled the plug on a third season of Luke Cage last month. One week after Iron Fist was pink slipped, that October 19 cancellation of Harlem’s Hero came after the nearly half scripts had been written for a Season 3 and a formal renewal had been considered a foregone conclusion.

Is Netflix pulling the plug, or is it a case of Disney/Marvel starting to circle the wagons for the release of their own streaming service?

I hung out with Al Lowe (Leisure Suit Larry, Freddy Pharkas, King's Quest, Police Quest, etc) the other day and it turns out he may have some of the only original copies of game source code for a lot of the those classic games. Now that he's in his 70s, he's selling a lot of his collection on Ebay and gave me a preview of what's to come.

A starting bid of $100 for the original Leisure Suit Larry source?>! Hell yes!! LOL

Path of Exile for PS4 Delayed to February 2019
Nov 29, 2018 - 8:12 AM - by Evil Avatar

Path of Exile on PlayStation 4 Release Delay

When we announced Path of Exile for PlayStation 4 earlier this month, we indicated we were aiming for a December release. Unfortunately, we have had to revise this to early February. We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience this causes, because we know there are many players looking forward to this release.

We underestimated the amount of work it would take to finish the certification process during the busy Christmas period. While we hope to have everything ready in January, we feel a lot more comfortable promising early February as a target release window. This will also give us time to work on game performance/frame rate, which we feel could be improved before release.

Again, we're very sorry about this. We understand that many PlayStation users were keen to play Betrayal over Christmas and have been eagerly awaiting release date news. We promise that Path of Exile will be awesome on PlayStation 4 when it is released early next year.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey 'Legacy of the First Blade' DLC Launches December 4
Nov 28, 2018 - 5:30 PM - by Evil Avatar

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade, Episode 1, Available December 4

Today, Ubisoft announced the release dates for the episodes of the first post-launch story arc of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Legacy of the First Blade. The first episode, Hunted, will release December 4 across all available platforms. Throughout Hunted and the following two episodes, players will continue their grand Greek Odyssey to encounter Darius, the legend who was first to wield the Assassin’s Hidden Blade.

As the story of Hunted unfolds, players will discover whether Darius is friend or foe, while meeting new characters, engaging in gripping naval combat, fighting new and powerful enemies, and uncovering revelations about the Assassin’s Creed universe.

Legacy of the First Blade continues to bring players’ choice to the forefront through the relationships they build with colorful characters and the decisions they make along the way. In Legacy of the First Blade, players can also customise new equipment and master new special abilities as they fight their way across Greece, engaging in visceral battles on land and on sea to continue their Odyssey and become a true hero of legend.

After Hunted releases on December 4, the second episode, Shadow Heritage, and the third episode, Bloodline, will complete the first story arc in early 2019 across all platforms.

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey post-launch plan is the biggest and most ambitious in the franchise, and the launch of Legacy of the First Blade is just the beginning for players who wish to progress further with new content in Ancient Greece. Season Pass owners will access two major episodic storylines, Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis. Players can dive into new episodes as they premiere, or experience the epic adventures in their entirety once all episodes are available. The Season Pass also includes Assassin’s Creed III Remastered and Assassin’s Creed Liberation Remastered, which will be released in March 2019.

Legacy of the First Blade can be purchased as part of the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Season Pass, which is available from Ł29.99, or separately as a story arc, on December 4.

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan - Dev Diary #1: Designing the Ghost Ship

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe have released the first development diary for their upcoming cinematic horror game ‘The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan’. This dev-diary focuses on the creation of one of the most important aspects of the game, the Ghost Ship itself.

In the first Dev-diary, the Supermassive Games team talk about everything from the authentic audio of the door latches, the way sound reverberates inside the ship to the concept and influences behind the creation of the ship. Every detail was designed in order to give players the most terrifying and atmospheric experience possible.

The Dark Pictures Anthology is a series of stand-alone, cinematic horror games, designed to deliver a new and terrifying experience at regular intervals. Each game is unconnected and will feature a brand-new story, setting and a new cast of characters. In Man of Medan, four young Americans set sail on a diving trip, to find a rumored WWII wreck. As the day unfolds, and a storm rolls in, their trip soon changes into something much more sinister.

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan will launch in 2019 in both boxed and digital editions for PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One and PC with EFIG voiceovers.

Alien Blackout Teased for The Game Awards
Nov 27, 2018 - 7:00 AM - by Evil Avatar

There are rumblings in the world of Alien video games, with a new title looking set for an announcement at The Game Awards in December.

Last week a 20th Century Fox trademark for an unannounced video game called Alien: Blackout was spotted.

This trademark tallies with a Twitter tease from The Game Awards chief Geoff Keighley, who posted an image including the words "WORLDS WILL CHANGE" in a font that looks a lot like the Weyland-Yutani font from the films. Weyland-Yutani, of course, is the Alien universe's evil corporation that wants to profit from the xenomorphs, rather than nuke them from orbit.

So, who could be developing Alien: Blackout, and what kind of game is it? Well, it very much looks like it's the work of a US studio called Cold Iron, which was bought by 20th Century Fox subsidiary FoxNext to develop a new Alien game. Cold Iron was founded in 2015 by former members of Cryptic Studios (Neverwinter, City of Heroes).

According to Cold Iron's website, its Alien game is a new PC and console shooter. There's also a whiff of Destiny about the project. Here's what FoxNext's president of studios Aaron Loeb said in a press release issued back in January 2018:

"I am a personal fan of Cold Iron's previous work and all of us at FoxNext Games are thrilled to be working with them as they create an action-packed persistent world, steeped in the mysteries of this beloved Alien universe."

The Game Awards is set to take place on 6th December, or for us poor Brits, very early 7th December. That's not a surprise. Announcements mostly come at night... mostly.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 'Battle Overview' Part 1
Nov 26, 2018 - 5:53 PM - by Evil Avatar

Experience the bigger, better Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 in part one of our Overview series

Space-naval combat returns in Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2, the highly-anticipated sequel from Tindalos Interactive and Focus Home Interactive, improving on every facet of the first game to make a bigger, better experience for admirals everywhere, and an even greater adaptation of the original board game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Today’s Battle Overview Part 1 video is the first in a two-part series that will teach you the huge number of options at your disposal in Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2. Get everything you need to know ahead of the first beta phase, scheduled from December 5 to December 12.

With more factions and more ships come bigger battles, with larger fleets clashing to control the Eye of Terror and the surrounding region of space dubbed the Aegis Ocularis. All twelve factions from the tabletop game are now represented, and each has unique ships, new mechanics, and much more to show off.

Be it unique ways of moving through space or weird, alien weaponry and ships, each faction feels distinct from its peers. Even those that share similarities such as the Aeldari Corsairs and Asuryani Craftworlds or the Tau Protectorate Fleet and Merchant Fleet have differences in what they can field. This makes your faction selection, and choice of ships, armaments, admiral skills, and fleet upgrades totally customisable and massively impactful.

In the trailer you’ll see how all this combines with the layout of maps, capture points, the enemy fleet, and the various phases of battle to create a challenging and spectacular simulation of space combat. Prioritise targeting weapons or engines, kill crews with boarding actions to turn enemy ships into floating hulks, or go all out on ramming enemy ships and committing to close-quarters battles.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 releases January 24, 2019, on PC. Pre-orders receive a 10% discount ahead of launch, 25% if they own the original Battlefleet Gothic: Armada. Beta testing begins in early December for all pre-orders.

Ghost of a Tale Launches for PS4 and Xbox One in February 2019
Nov 26, 2018 - 5:49 PM - by Evil Avatar

Ghost of a Tale Xbox One and PS4 Release

Following a discussion with our distributor we’ve been made aware that releasing the Xbox One version of Ghost of a Tale smack in the middle of the holiday’s season is Not a Good Idea™. That is unless we want it to go totally unnoticed.

Important semantic point here: a distributor is a partner who is paid by a developer to make a game available on as many platforms, worldwide, as possible. A publisher actually finances and drives a game’s development, and as a result can impose its rules (likely dictated by marketing considerations). It often owns the final game’s intellectual property and sometimes owns the developer itself.

Now as you all know we don’t have a publisher. By choice. Which means we’re absolutely independent and as such we can do pretty much what we want. However we’re still capable of recognizing sound advice when we hear one!

In parallel with this we have also been informed that the PlayStation 4 version of the game will be ready towards the beginning of the year, for a potential release in February.

So the decision was straight-forward: We will do a simultaneous console release of Ghost of a Tale on Xbox One and PS4 in February.

This way we’ll stand a much better chance at getting noticed by the specialized websites, which at this point is exactly what the game needs.

Red Dead Online Beta Early Access Begins Tomorrow, November 27

Now that everyone has had a chance over the past month to experience the story of Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in Red Dead Redemption 2, it is almost time to begin the beta period for Red Dead Online. Early access to the Red Dead Online beta begins tomorrow on Tuesday, November 27, working up to full public access on Friday, November 30.

Built from the ground up for the latest hardware, Red Dead Online blends the classic multiplayer of the original Red Dead Redemption with the best of everything we have learned since then about creating deep multiplayer experiences. The result is something completely new and fun, and an experience that will continue to expand and evolve over time.

A Vibrant New World

With the gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2 as its foundation, Red Dead Online transforms the vast and deeply detailed landscapes, cities, towns and habitats of Red Dead Redemption 2 into a new, living online world ready to be shared by multiple players. Create and customize your character, tailor your abilities to suit your play style and head out into a new frontier full of things to experience.

Explore the world solo or with friends. Form or join a Posse to ride with up to seven players; gather around the fire at your Camp; head out hunting or fishing; visit bustling towns; battle enemy gangs and attack their hideouts; hunt for treasure; take on missions and interact with familiar characters from across the five states; or fight against other outlaws in both spontaneous skirmishes and pitched set-piece battles; compete with other players or whole Posses in open world challenges and much more.

Beta Period and Access

The launch of the Red Dead Online Beta is the first step in what will be a continually expanding and dynamic world, and the beta period will allow us to deal with the inevitable turbulence of launching any online experience of this size and scale.

During this process, we will be looking to our dedicated community to help us report and fix problems, share ideas, and assist in shaping the future of the full Online experience. As with all of our releases, we will strive to make the launch of Red Dead Online the best it can possibly be, and we ask that the community share that spirit with us over the next weeks and months.

To help us ease into the beta and to mitigate major issues, we will begin the early access period starting Tuesday, November 27 at 8:30am EST, and gradually scale the player base up to full access beginning on Friday, November 30. This will help ensure that our servers can handle a steadily growing volume of concurrent players in the early hours and first days of the Beta and hopefully reduce the likelihood of any server crashes during the launch week as we get things up and running. Full rollout details are as follows:

Tuesday, November 27th: All Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition owners. Please note, players who purchased the physical Ultimate Edition must redeem the Ultimate Edition code in the packaging to be eligible.

Wednesday, November 28th: All players who played Red Dead Redemption 2 on October 26th according to our data.

Thursday, November 29th: All players who played Red Dead Redemption 2 between October 26th to October 29th according to our data.

Friday, November 30th: All players who own Red Dead Redemption 2.

The Red Dead Online Beta will be available to anyone who owns Red Dead Redemption 2 on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One starting Friday, November 30. When booting up Red Dead Redemption 2 and arriving to the title menu, you will see an option in the top right of the screen to select Online.

Stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire tomorrow for more details about Red Dead Online modes, gameplay and more.

Is it still Black Friday? It might be if you are publisher Bethesda Softworks and you decided to take old Fallout 4 game assets and release them as a new game.

Is it as bad as it sounds? Ask writer Aaron Birch who is back with the Evil Avatar Fallout 76 review.
