Four years after it was announced, Crackdown 3 is in a tough spot
Jul 16, 2018 - 12:41 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

When Dave Jones, one of the chief creators of Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto and the first Crackdown game, took to the stage during Microsoft's 2015 Gamescom media briefing to present pre-alpha in-game footage of Crackdown 3, gamers were promised a competitive multiplayer open-world experience with "100 per cent destructible environments". By connecting to the Microsoft cloud, Crackdown 3 would benefit from 20 times the computational power of the Xbox One, we were told. As virtual buildings blew apart in the most realistic, expansive way we'd ever seen in a video game before, Crackdown fans dared to dream about the kind of game they would eventually play.

As with so much to do with video games, however, dreams rarely turn into reality.

Fast forward to 2018 and Crackdown 3 is in a tough spot. It's suffered multiple delays, met with apathy online and was even rumoured to be cancelled. Behind the scenes, developers - a raft of developers - have worked hard to turn Crackdown 3 into a real video game that will actually come out. They have faced multiple challenges along the way, which, people close to the project speaking with Eurogamer anonymously have indicated, has a lot to do with that pesky cloud-powered multiplayer, its "100 per cent destructible environments" and exactly who is - and isn't - working on the game.

What's behind Nintendo's falling stock price?
Jul 15, 2018 - 10:13 AM - by Emabulator

Gamesindustry.biz has the story.

Since Nintendo has just had its best 12 months in around a decade - both in commercial and creative terms - you just knew the other shoe was bound to drop sooner or later. Nintendo's fans and well-wishers never get this kind of a run of luck without interruption, and right enough, over the past few weeks the company's stock has taken a nose-dive, repeatedly levelling off only to plummet again as investors seemingly lose confidence in the platform holder's plans and its ability to meet its sales targets.

This is no small wobble; the company has now lost almost a quarter of its value on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in a series of price drops that began in late May. The curious thing about this drop, however, is that it's not really the kind of Nintendo rough patch anyone might have been anticipating.

There are a fair few ways in which Nintendo might have been predicted to mess up its recent run of success: a huge dry patch in its software release schedule, a failure to supply the market with enough hardware, doing something jaw-droppingly dense with its online service, or simply clamping up and failing to reassure consumers and investors of a solid release slate for the coming year. It's done all of those and more in the past, and had any of those things been followed by a massive share price slump, you'd shrug your shoulders and say, oh well, it was a good run.

The thing is that, in this instance, despite the billions wiped off Nintendo's valuation, it's actually really hard to pin down a specific reason for it beyond a general loss of investor confidence. None of the things mentioned above has happened, at least not in as dramatic a fashion as might explain such a pronounced drop in share price.

Some are pointing fingers at the lack of game announcements at E3, which definitely precipitated a further drop, but the decline started almost a month before. Moreover, the decline has continued long after any influence from E3's supposedly underwhelming showing ought to have been priced in. While the downward movement is slower now, it's still apparent week to week. Moreover, the market itself - the Tokyo Stock Exchange - is in fairly solid health all things considered, so the issue here is Nintendo-specific, and not an amplification of underlying market problems or uncertainty.

Xenos In Aliens: Colonial Marines De-lobotomized By Fixing A Typo
Jul 15, 2018 - 8:55 AM - by Emabulator

Tales from the Gearbox Software crypt. Game Informer has the story.

It's no secret that Aliens: Colonial Marines was a mess. The story was lackluster, the gunplay unsatisfying. Worst of all, encounters with the game's xenomorphs could be downright comical. Instead of the stalking menaces we saw in the films, players were left fighting aliens that acted surprised to be there. But what if there was an easy way to mitigate at least some of the damage? A modder's discovery from a year ago is suddenly getting a lot of attention for doing just that.

James Dickinson, who has been working on an overhaul mod for the game, made the bizarre discovery while poking around with the game's configuration files. By correcting a typo in a .ini file from "teather" to "tether," the aliens seem to gain a whole new interest in actively participating in the game. You can see the full instructions in his post.

I decided to give it a shot, so I reinstalled the game and tested it out myself. First, I launched it as-is, and was instantly reminded of why I thought it stunk when I reviewed it five years ago. The aliens didn't behave like they did in the films; instead of behaving like cunning predators, they sprinted at characters like they just wanted to get it all over with as quickly as possible.

Then I fixed the typo. The difference was significant. The xenos seemed as though they were more aware of their surroundings, incorporating cover into their attacks and generally behaving like active participants in their game. Dickinson speculates that the typo prevented the A.I. from reacting to its environment or switching routines from, say, patrolling to flanking. Regardless of what's happening under the hood, it's worth trying. You're not likely to make it any worse, after all. (Case in point: On a fresh install, the game dropped me into the world without my pulse rifle. Or at least, it wasn't visible or functional. At least my shotgun decided to come along.)

Zombieland 2 Is Happening In 2019 With Original Cast And Director
Jul 14, 2018 - 8:57 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Update: After being teased by the writers, the sequel is now official. According to Variety, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin are all returning for the film, along with director Ruben Fleischer. Production is expected to begin in January 2019, with an October 2019 release in the works. The original story follows.

The cult classic Zombieland, which came out in 2009, may be getting a sequel. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick--who wrote the original--told Vulture that a sequel with the original cast might be in theaters by October 2019 to celebrate the original's 10-year anniversary.

"We're going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland,” Wernick said. "Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don't know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2...with the original cast, by the way."

No Man’s Sky 11 Things That Have Changed Since Launch Trailer
Jul 11, 2018 - 7:16 PM - by Evil Avatar

A a message from developer Hello Games’ Sean Murray

Hello everyone – it’s an exciting and super busy month for Hello Games and No Man’s Sky as we have our massive NEXT update launching across all platforms on July 24, and for the first time on Xbox One!

We will be sharing more details about the new content in the run up to launch. But a question we get asked all the time is ‘what’s changed in No Man’s Sky?’, so our friends at 505 Games have made a handy vid “11 Things That Have Changed in No Man’s Sky Since Launch” to remind everybody about the many many things that have changed… since launch.

There are a lot more than 11, in fact there are 100’s as you can see in the lists here: Foundation Update - Pathfinder Update - Atlas Rise Update

But we chose our favourite 11 as the video would go on for far too long...

Changes we’ve highlighted include a regenerated universe, newly opened portal stargates, new biomes, deeper trading, exocraft for advanced exploration, new modes (Survival / Permadeath / Creative), base building, new missions/story, terrain manipulation, crashed / interstellar freighters, and deeper space combat.

Thanks so much,

The Gardens Between Blooms on Nintendo Switch Q3 2018
Jul 11, 2018 - 6:37 PM - by Evil Avatar

The Gardens Between, the adventure puzzle game from The Voxel Agents in which players manipulate time to guide two best friends through a surreal world of mysterious garden islands, will come to the Nintendo Switch system in Q3 2018 simultaneously alongside the previously announced PlayStation 4, Windows and Mac releases.

Reminisce with The Gardens Between for the first time on Nintendo Switch at Gamescom in hall 3.2, booth A70. Following its Gamescom debut, The Gardens Between will be playable at PAX West.

Arina, a headstrong girl, and Frendt, a boy wise beyond his years, fall into a series of vibrant, dreamlike island gardens peppered with everyday objects that hold a special significance to the duo. Together they embark on an emotional journey that examines the significance of their friendship: the memories they’ve built, what must be let go, and what should never be left behind.

Designed as an homage to the enduring power of friendship, The Gardens Between places you in control of not the characters themselves, but the force which will change and shape their relationship: time. In the mysterious realm they find themselves transported to, cause and effect are malleable and time flows in all directions. Solve puzzles to reach the apex of each isle and light up constellations of memories, illuminating threads of a bittersweet narrative.

On Nintendo Switch players will be able to follow Arina and Frendt on the go, solving mind-bending puzzles on a break at work or enjoying the gorgeous environments with friends at a party. The console’s HD Rumble feature brings the game’s lush world to life, underscoring curious moments of time and imagination.

“The Gardens Between is an homage to the friendships from our childhoods that felt so impossibly large that the bonds could never be broken,” says Simon Joslin, co-founder of The Voxel Agents. “We took inspiration from our own childhoods when building the narrative of The Gardens Between. We wanted to tap into something relatable, familiar and nostalgic. The magic of being a kid is fleeting, but the story of Arina and Frendt captures that enchantment in a beautiful package.”

For more information, please visit The Garden Between’s official website.

Neill Blomkamp To Direct New ‘RoboCop’
Jul 11, 2018 - 12:50 PM - by Booda
EXCLUSIVE: MGM is developing a new installment of RoboCop and has set District 9 director Neill Blomkamp to helm the picture, which is titled RoboCop Returns. The studio hopes to revive a franchise that began with the Paul Verhoeven-directed satirical sci-fi action thriller that Orion released in 1987. Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and exec producing, respectively. Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the Terminator film that Tim Miller is shooting, will rewrite the script that Neumeier and Miner wrote years ago as a planned sequel to Verhoeven’s hit, an installment that never happened. That duo is creatively involved in moving forward their creation for the first time since the original.

Joaquin Phoenix's standalone #Joker movie will begin shooting this September
Jul 10, 2018 - 5:46 PM - by Evil Avatar

The Joker origin movie is officially a go at Warner Bros.

Joaquin Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star as the arch-nemesis of Batman and shooting is set to begin in September in New York.

Todd Phillips is directing the film and co-wrote the script, which the studio describes as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” Scott Silver co-wrote the script.

Warners has yet to stake out a release date for the film, which goes against the grain of most comic book movies that have flags planted years in advance. But the Joker stand-alone pic is meant to be different from other comic book superhero movies.

The project's budget is in the $55 million range, significantly lower than the tentpoles that dominate the form. And the stand-alone is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content (at least as experimental as a studio can be with established brands such as DC), which is described as being akin to a crime drama.

That said, there is a chance that the movie could be ready for release as early as late 2019, depending on various factors.

Far Cry 5: Lost on Mars Launches on July 17th
Jul 10, 2018 - 5:27 PM - by Evil Avatar

Far Cry 5: Lost on Mars Launches on July 17th

Today, Ubisoft announced Far Cry 5: Lost on Mars, the second post-launch adventure, will release July 17th 2018 on available platforms. Lost on Mars continues the uncanny adventures in the Far Cry 5 Season Pass as players travel to Mars to eradicate an alien threat. Lost on Mars can be purchased as a stand-alone DLC, as part of the season pass or the Gold Edition.

Lost on Mars transports the franchise’s insanity from Hope County to the red planet as Nick Rye is teleported to a hostile planet to help his buddy Hurk thwart an alien invasion of Earth. This adventure gives players a new arsenal of alien weaponry, including the Blaster of Disaster, Hellfire and Morphinator, while also introducing a new transversal tool with Space Jets. Humankind’s future is in the hands of the game’s most notorious guns-for-hire. Time to squash some bugs!

In addition, all Far Cry 5 players will have access to new Mars-themed assets in Far Cry Arcade, which is available now. Map builders will be able to integrate these assets into their existing maps or create new sci-fi-themed maps. Future content will also include thematic assets that will be added to Far Cry Arcade for free. Those who download the Lost on Mars DLC will also gain access to new weapons – Obliteratorrrr, Taser Phazer Annihilazer, Nerve Reaper, Grape Popper and Hellfire – to use as they liberate Hope County from the Project at Eden’s Gate.

Far Cry 5 post-launch will continue with a final DLC adventure – Dead Living Zombies – which will be released in August. An additional asset drop will give map builders more tools to create unique Far Cry Arcade experiences. The adventures are available in the season pass or as stand-alone DLC purchases, while new asset releases for Far Cry Arcade will be available for free to all players in future title updates.

Set in America, a first for the franchise, Far Cry 5 offers players total freedom to navigate a serene-looking yet deeply twisted world as the new junior deputy of fictional Hope County, Montana. Players will find that their arrival accelerates a years-long silent coup by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden’s Gate, igniting a violent takeover of the county. Under siege and cut off from the rest of the world, players will join forces with residents of Hope County and form the Resistance. Far Cry 5 will continue to receive premium DLC adventures available in the season pass, as well as free content, including new Far Cry Arcade assets and in-game live events following the launch.

Valve Plugged The Hole But Important Data Has Already Escaped
Jul 10, 2018 - 5:33 AM - by BeardedSonOfNel

Via Ars Technica
A recently discovered hole in Valve's API allowed observers to generate extremely precise and publicly accessible data for the total number of players for thousands of Steam games. While Valve has now closed this inadvertent data leak, Ars can still provide the data it revealed as a historical record of the aggregate popularity of a large portion of the Steam library.

The new data derivation method, as ably explained in a Medium post from The End Is Nigh developer Tyler Glaiel, centers on the percentage of players who have accomplished developer-defined Achievements associated with many games on the service. On the Steam web site, that data appears rounded to two decimal places. In the Steam API, however, the Achievement percentages were, until recently, provided to an extremely precise 16 decimal places.

Despite its heroes’ diminutive size, Ant-Man and the Wasp opened with typical Marvel might at the box office, with an estimated $76 million in ticket sales.

Here is the Weekend Boxoffice Chart for the weekend of July 6th to July 8th, 2018.
  1. Ant-Man and the Wasp $76.0/$76.0
  2. Incredibles 2 $29.0/$504.3
  3. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom $28.5/$333.3
  4. The First Purge $17.1/$31.0
  5. Sicario: Day of the Soldado $7.3/$35.3
  6. Uncle Drew $6.6/$29.9
  7. Ocean's 8 $5.2/$126.7
  8. Tag $3.1/$48.3
  9. Won't You Be My Neighbor? $2.5/$12.3
  10. Deadpool 2 $1.6/$314.5
  11. Whitney $1.2/$1.2
  12. Sanju $1.2/$5.9

Ant-Man and the Wasp was a fun little late-summer movie, though it was a little bit on the tried-and-true formula side of things. I hope Marvel starts to shake things up a bit, they haven't been taking many chances outside of Thor: Ragnarok.

Star Wars: Episode IX Eyes Keri Russell
Jul 08, 2018 - 9:36 AM - by Emabulator

Variety has the story.

Keri Russell is headed to a galaxy far, far away.

Sources tell Variety that the “Felicity” alum is in early talks to join J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which Abrams is writing and directing. Russell and Abrams last collaborated on 2006’s “Mission: Impossible III.”

The role calls for action-heavy fight scenes. Russell has shown her ability to perform tough stunts in projects like FX’s “The Americans,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.”

Abrams and Lucasfilm execs met with several actresses for the role in the past two months and settled on Russell right before the Fourth of July holiday. Abrams will likely cast two more actors by the time the film begins production at the end of the month. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver are all expected to return.

Abrams helmed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and was asked to come back to direct this latest installment after Colin Trevorrow exited following creative differences. Abrams filled the role last fall and has spent most of that time working on the script with Chris Terrio.

PS4 Genre-Swapping RPG Death End Re;Quest Announced For The West
Jul 08, 2018 - 9:14 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Idea Factory, the developer of the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, has announced a new title for PS4. During a panel at Anime Expo, the publisher unveiled the genre-changing RPG Death End Re;Quest, which will launch physically and digitally for Sony's console in North America and Europe in 2019.

Death End Re;Quest tells the story of video game programmer Arata Mizunashi and his colleague, Shina Ninomiya. Following Shina's mysterious disappearance, Arata discovers that she's actually trapped in an MMORPG they developed together called World's Odyssey, and the only way for her to escape is to complete the game and unlock its perfect ending--a feat that only has a 1% success rate.

Players will need to jump between the real and virtual worlds in Death End in order to unravel the mystery of World's Odyssey and help Shina escape. The game features a turn-based battle system, but it's most distinctive feature is the ability to change the game into a completely different genre during battle, such as a first-person shooter or a fighting game. Players will need to switch between different genres to gain an advantage over enemies and bosses.

Additionally, players will be able to utilize "Bug Skills" while exploring dungeons to discover otherwise inaccessible areas and bypass certain environmental obstacles, such as gliding over a pit of lava. Players will also be able to summon some of the bosses they've previously defeated into battle to help take on even more challenging foes.

Pure Evil - Fortnite All Nighter
Jul 07, 2018 - 5:14 PM - by Evil Avatar

Since my Heroes of the Storm account got handed a 7-day ban for using the word "Moron", I have decided to bail out on Heroes for a while and switch back to Fortnite.

I'm really just looking for games to eat up time that have a lot of items to unlock and Fortnite has tons of weapons, traps and heroes for you to unlock. After only a couple of days of play, I got three or four new epic heroes including a Metal Guy, a girl with a Pirate flag shirt and one of the two single-player Super Heroes (it seems like there are more super heroes in multiplayer, but single player is limited to two models).

I also unlocked a couple of the 4th of July heroes, but I haven't played much with them.

I'm sticking with the Save the World mode for now, the Battle Royale mode is just too slow paced for me. You either get killed the second you hit the ground, or you end up running around for 10-minutes before you ever encounter another player. It's little 1v1 matches just don't suit someone like me who prefers big team battles and games with vehicles.

I did have a big laugh over Epic's time-limited buildling mode. All the sudden all these big Fortnite streamers discovered that the could make castles, and versions of Nuke Town and Pirate Ships and other cool buildings... Um, Hello, Morons... you have always been able to build all that stuff in the Save the World mode and it even saves your base from game to game and you can invite your friends to defend your base from waves of zombies -- and since Fortnite's Zombies always attack your main base or one of the sub stations, you just doing all your costmetic building somewhere other than the main base and it never gets damaged in an attack. I just laugh because all these leeches playing for free didn't even realize that this mode was in the game all along. Hopefully, it will encourage more people to try out the Save the World mode.

Word today is that Digital Extreme's Warframe is getting a MASSIVE update. I always loved the artwork in that game, but when it first launched you couldn't make any progress without paying real cash. I have heard that they have mostly fixed that issue and now you can grind your way to gear. I'm certainly willing to give it another shot, it's co-op, has great art and lots of items and gear to unlock. What isn't there to love?

Halo TV Series Officially Ordered by Showtime for 2019
Jul 05, 2018 - 6:06 PM - by Evil Avatar

Showtime, Amblin Television and 343 Industries Bring Halo to Television

It’s a big day for Halo – Showtime president and CEO David Nevins announced the network has ordered a 10-episode season based on the legendary video game franchise!

In its adaptation for Showtime, Halo (working title) will take place in the universe that first came to be in 2001, dramatizing an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant. Kyle Killen (Awake) will serve as executive producer, writer and showrunner. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will direct multiple episodes and also executive produce the hour-long series which enters production in early 2019.

“Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded,” said Nevins. “In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”

“This is a truly exciting moment for the Halo franchise,” stated Kiki Wolfkill, head of Halo Transmedia at 343 Industries. “Together with our creative and production partners at Showtime and Amblin Television, the Halo television series will represent new and exciting way for fans to enter and engage with the Halo universe. We can’t wait to share more on what’s ahead.”

Halo will be executive produced by Killen, Wyatt and Scott Pennington, along with Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank for Amblin Television. The series will be distributed globally by CBS Studios International.

Child's Play Is Getting A Reboot
Jul 04, 2018 - 9:04 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Seems like Hollywood directors are really feeling the 80's nostalgia lately. Childs Play is getting a reboot so Chucky can return to haunt our nightmares.

In the original Child's Play franchise from the 1980s, a family is plagued by a doll that's possessed by a serial killer. MGM is being very hush-hush about the plot details, but Collider reports that it will follow a group of kids squaring off with a new age version of Chucky that's more technologically advanced. The film will be produced by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, who also produced It.

Whether it will be a true horror film or more of a jokey version in the vein of the later films in the original franchise is unclear. It begins production in September in Vancouver and it will be directed by Lars Klevberg who also directed the horror movie Polaroid. Tyler Burton Smith will write the script; he wrote Kung Fury 2 as well as the video game Quantum Break.

Netflix Testing Out Pricier New ‘Ultra’ Plan at $16.99 per Month
Jul 04, 2018 - 8:45 AM - by Emabulator

Variety has the story.

Netflix is kicking the tires on a new high-end streaming plan — dubbed “Ultra” — to see whether consumers are willing to pay more for four Ultra HD streams or content in HDR format.

The Ultra plans cost $16.99 per month and is being tested in two versions. One offers four Ultra HD streams, while the existing $13.99 Premium plan would drop from four to two UHD streams. In the second offer, both Premium and Ultra customers would have access to four concurrent Ultra HD streams but only Ultra customers would have access to high dynamic range (HDR) content, which provides more vibrant color reproduction and higher contrast.

The new test offers were first reported by Italian tech blog TuttoAndroid.net. According to Cordcutting.com, Netflix is testing two different price points for Ultra: The company’s German site showed different prices (€16.99 and €19.99) depending on the user’s browser.

Netflix first introduced the four-stream “family plan” in 2013, as a premium alternative to the standard HD plan that provides access to two concurrent streams per account. A year later, it modified the packages so that Ultra HD content was available only in the higher-priced tier. Now Netflix is looking to see how much consumers value HDR versus four-stream access.

Netflix has confirmed the Ultra tests, and says only a subset of customers will be shown the higher-priced options. In addition, as with any of the company’s trial program, Netflix may not decide to more widely roll out the Ultra tier.

Shenmue HD Remaster Release Date Confirmed By Sega
Jul 03, 2018 - 5:45 PM - by Evil Avatar

A new trailer released by SEGA Europe confirms that the HD remastered versions of Shenmue I and II will get a release date in August. Get ready to relive the Shenmue saga all over again. The first Shenmue game released in 1999 for the SEGA Dreamcast and introduced an action-adventure title set in an open world environment complete with hand-to-hand combat and roleplaying elements.

The title was groundbreaking: It was one of the first games to include day and nighttime within the environment, as well as variable weather, non-player characters, vending machines and arcade games. The story was equally as strong, which followed the adventures of Ryo Hazuki as he went on a mission to find the person responsible for his father's death in 1980s China. Shenmue II followed in 2001 as a direct sequel to the first game, building upon the elements created in the first. Both games act as early examples of what many action-adventure RPGs have become since then.

Manahan is an alternate reality where level progression is quicker, dungeons are tougher, battlegrounds are switched up, and special changes are added to pretty much everything. Regardless of if you are a new or returning player, TERA’s most recent update has something for everyone.

Valve Is Working On Replacing Steam Spy For Developers
Jul 01, 2018 - 9:02 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Months after the company effectively ended third-party Steam sales data tracking site Steam Spy by updating their privacy settings, Valve has announced it is working on a more accurate replacement for developers.

PCGamesN reports that at this week's White Night game developer event in St. Petersburg, Russia, indie game developer Michael Kuzmin asked Valve's Jan-Peter Ewert about whether the company was working on a way of getting sales data to developers. While Steam Spy was a third-party site whose accuracy was inconsistent, it allowed developers to make informed decisions about whether their particular kind of game could do well, who their biggest competitors were, and when the right time to release might be. While the numbers weren't exact, it often gave important ballparks for developers to consider when marketing their game.

"Our general approach has been to provide open APIs so that when we don't offer the amount of tools that we should, the community can step in, which allows things like Steamspy to happen," Ewert responded. Valve had two problems with Steam Spy, however. The first was its lack of compliance with GDPR (a European set of guidelines that enforce data privacy) protocols. The second was that Steam Spy "had a broad variance in how accurate it was," Ewert said. "It was very accurate for some games, it was very inaccurate for a few others."

To fix the issue, the company announced it is working on something better than Steam Spy, since anything that helps developers market and sell their games can only help Steam. "The only way that we make money is if [developers] make good decisions in bringing the right games to the platform and finding your audience," Ewert said. "So yes, we are very much working on new tools and new ways of getting data out of Steam, and we hope that data can be more accurate and more useful than what Steam Spy previously offered."

EA says FIFA 19 will disclose Ultimate Team pack odds
Jun 30, 2018 - 10:22 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

FIFA 19 will include pack odds disclosures, EA has confirmed to Eurogamer.

Speaking to our reporter Robert Purchese at the Gamelab conference in Spain, EA Sports vice president and COO Daryl Holt said FIFA Ultimate Team Packs will show odds from FIFA 19 on.

Here's what Holt told us:

"For Ultimate Team, when you buy a pack you know what you are getting. You are getting a certain number of assets that are guaranteed - and we're going to start to do pack odds disclosures that'll show you the odds of what you might get.

"That'll be in our product year 19 titles. So, at least that aspect of understanding what the chances are of getting X, Y and Z card."

However, Holt did not go into detail on exactly what pack contents FIFA 19 will disclose the odds of - and when we followed up with EA, the company declined to offer any additional information.

As it stands in FIFA 18, Ultimate Team packs give you a vague idea of what you'll get inside them. For example, FIFA 18 tells players a Gold Pack includes a mix of 12 items, including players and consumables, at least 10 Gold and one Rare.

Legendary Author Harlan Ellison Dies age 84
Jun 28, 2018 - 5:36 PM - by Evil Avatar

EvilAvatar.com has learned of the passing of Harlan Ellison, a giant in the field of science fiction literature and entertainment. Christine Valada, the widow of comics author and Ellison friend Len Wein, announced his passing at age 84.

Best known for his classic short sci-fi stories “‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said the Ticktockman” (1965) and “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream” (1967) and editing the legendary anthology “Dangerous Visions,” Ellison earned a reputation as sharp writer who often had contentious feuds with colleagues and business partners. He remained vocally unhappy with the filmed version of the 1967 Star Trek episode he wrote titled “The City on the Edge of Forever,” despite it being universally considered the greatest episode of the show ever produced. He also famously sued filmmaker James Cameron over the 1984 hit The Terminator, claiming it stole key plot elements from his Outer Limits episode “Soldier.” The suit resulted in an out of court settlement and an onscreen acknowledgement to his work at the end of the film. He also was highly lauded for his writing, winning multiple Hugos, Nebulas and Edgars for his work over the decades.
I have always been a massive fan of Ellison's work, it is sad that he spent the better part of the last three decades suing other people who wrote stuff instead of writing stuff himself. At this point his legacy is more about his being an enormous asshole than an enormous talent. Sad.

Yes, Todd Howard and team have settled on The Elder Scrolls 6's region
Jun 28, 2018 - 5:53 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

When Todd Howard announced The Elder Scrolls 6 at the end of Bethesda's E3 show, the message was clear: we're working on the game but it's a very long way away. We saw a very brief trailer of a mountainous, coastal environment, and then a logo, and that was it.

But what were we seeing? Was this the setting of the new game or a kind of red herring - a generic Elder Scrollsian scene made for the trailer? Has Bethesda Game Studios even settled on the region we'll play in yet?

I thought we'd wait yonks for an answer but as luck would have it I got one from Todd Howard at Spanish conference Gamelab this week.

"Yes," he told me, Bethesda has settled on the region The Elder Scrolls 6 will be based in. And it was decided, he said, "a while ago".

Is it possible, then, to work out from the trailer which region it is?

"I obviously would say yes," he said, "but you can't - it's intentionally... You can rule some things out. And you can rule some things in.

"The first thing we do is the world so we've known for a while where it's set."

We had fun going to town on The Elder Scrolls 6 trailer and trying to work out where the game will take place, and we think we've figured it out - so I put our best guess to Howard.

"Is it Hammerfell?" I asked.

"I'm not going to answer where it's set!" he laughed.

Epic Sues Fortnite QA Tester Who Leaked Battle Royale Season 4 Secrets
Jun 28, 2018 - 4:48 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

According to Polygon, Epic Games sued Thomas Hannah, a quality assurance contractor, on May 7 for leaking spoilers for Fortnite: season four. Through a third party, Hannah spread information about where Fortnite's meteor would hit, an action in direct violation of his non-disclosure agreement.

Prior to the leak, most Fortnite theorists believed they had decoded a secret message that hinted Titled Towers would be the crash zone of the meteor. The leak debunked this prediction, and informed players that Dusty Depot was the actual target. Epic is accusing Hannah of deliberately working with a third party to leak this info.

Hannah's defense against the accusations is that he did not purposely leak the target location. According to him, he was bombarded by "a series of questions and guesses regarding where the meteor would hit," at the end of Fortnite: Battle Royale season three. Hannah then shared the information in a private conversation, assuming it would remain confidential. It did not, and the spoilers were published to a subreddit. Both the post and the account that created it have since been deleted, but the internet is forever and this was no exception.

Epic claims the damages this leak has done cannot be fixed with money, as the company "has suffered and is continuing to suffer irreparable injury." The company is seeking punitive damages under both state and federal trade secret laws.

EA has shared details on Battlefield V's first closed alpha. The limited-time test is scheduled to begin Thursday, June 28, and will allow certain players to try out the upcoming World War II shooter ahead of its release later this fall, including a portion of one Grand Operation.

According to Battlefield's official website, the closed alpha will be available on PC and can only be joined by invitation, which EA says will be distributed to a "small group" of Battlefield players. The invitations will contain a code to download the alpha client, which must be redeemed via Origin in order to get in.

Those who do get invited to participate in the closed alpha will be able to try two of Battlefield V's modes: Conquest and Grand Operation Fall of Norway. The former is the classic Battlefield multiplayer mode that pits two teams against each other in a struggle to seize control of key points on the map, while Grand Operation is a narrative-driven multiplayer experience that encompasses different maps and gametypes.
Let us know if you got in! I'm sure I'm signed up for the beta, but I would have picked the PS4 as my platform so I doubt I'll get an invite for this first beta.
