Kingdom Come: Deliverance Developer Compromising On Controversial Save System
Feb 19, 2018 - 2:39 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the news from the kingdom.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance has been fairly successful, but definitely has a controversial save system that the developers are changing, but just a little bit.

In our guide to surviving Kingdom Come: Deliverance, we go over the way the save system currently works.
You need to learn how to deal with Kingdom Come's quirky save system. You can only save when you're resting in bed or by using Savior Schnapps, a craftable/purchasable drink that also makes you drunk. The Schnapps are a pain to come by early on, so your best bet is to remember your sleeping spots (whether they're inns or the mill you start out with) and fast travel to them when you need to save. You want to do this often. Very often. That might sound like a pain, but it sure does beat losing multiple hours of progress to a gang of bandits in the woods or, worse, a stupid bug.
The lack of a quick save has frustrated some players, which has the developers hoping to meet them halfway.

In the upcoming 1.3 patch, developers Warhorse will introduce a "Save and Exit" feature, which saves the game on command but quits out isn't quite what players want, but it allows players to avoid losing progress for terrible reasons. The new save system will come with tweaks to lock picking and pickpocketing, but this bundle of fixes is currently scheduled for an indeterminate time in the future.

The developers have promoted Kingdom Come: Deliverance as a title that strictly adheres to realism and history to explain design choices, which is why drinking saves your progress and the game is introducing a magic respec potion in the same future patch.

There's a Tomb Raider Barbie Doll
Feb 19, 2018 - 2:03 PM - by Emabulator

Ken you believe it. Eurogamer has the earth shattering news.

Barbie has been an astronaut, a vet, even a mermaid. Now, she's a Tomb Raider.

Doll maker Mattel has unveiled Tomb Raider Barbie (thanks, IGN), which is less a new look for Barbie herself and more just an action figure of Alicia Vikander, who portrays Lara Croft in next month's film.

(There are a range of Barbie dolls which aren't actually Barbie herself, something which I've just found out browsing Barbie.com.)

Along with the doll you also get a map, a journal and a tiny pickaxe - perfect for plunging into the head of any nearby Ken who talks about this Lara being someone you want to protect.
Editor: I got a call from Evil Avatar, who is not currently in the EvAv Dungeon performing medical experiments on social justice warriors, and he says that the Tomb Raider Barbie is definitely not an action figure.

Report: Transformers Movie Series To Be Completely Rebooted
Feb 19, 2018 - 1:12 PM - by Emabulator

Autobots, transform and roll out! GameSpot has the story.

Although the Transformers franchise has proven to be a hugely poplar one, 2017's The Last Knight was the least successful film by some distance, suggesting that audience interest in the series might be fading. The spin-off Bumblebee is due out later this year, but a new report states that beyond that, Paramount is planning to reboot the whole series.

As reported by Transformer World, toy manufacturers Hasbro confirmed at the company's Toy Fair 2018 Investor Preview that the series will be entirely reset. In addition, a new agreement with Paramount means that Hasbro will have greater control over the property, including greenlighting movie projects. The site also reports that no Transformers movies beyond Bumblebee remain on Paramount's release schedule.

This is something of a change in fortune for the series. In October 2015, Hasbro announced that there would be at last four more movies, and that a "writers room" had been established to map out the next decade of Transformers across movies, TV, and digital. Following this, Paramount confirmed that Transformers 6 would arrive in 2019, which seems to be no longer the case.

The Last Knight made $605 million worldwide. This was well below the $1.104 billion haul for its predecessor, 2014's The Age of Extinction, and less than the first movie made back in 2007.

Remedy's Upcoming Third-Person Action Game, Codenamed P7, Coming in 2019
Feb 18, 2018 - 2:14 PM - by Emabulator

Remedy Entertainment's P7 is being published by 505 Games for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. PC Gamer has the story.

Alan Wake and Max Payne developer Remedy Entertainment's mysterious upcoming third-person action game, codenamed P7, will release in 2019, the company has announced. We don't know much about P7 yet, other than it's a "cinematic third person action game" set in a "new Remedy-created universe" that will offer a "long-lasting experience". So, yeah, it could be anything.

In its financial statement for 2017 published this week, Remedy said the game—which will be published by Payday 2 publisher 505 Games—has "progressed according to our plans", leaving pre-production last year.

Remedy also plans to launch a third, unannounced project during 2018, the financial statement revealed. Again, we don't know much, other than they'll be hiring new staff for the game, but it's still interesting. As well as P7 and this new project, Remedy is still developing the story mode for upcoming FPS Crossfire 2.

A 2019 release date means that we should find out more about P7 at some point this year, and I wouldn't be surprised if Remedy keeps its cards close to its chest until one of the big conventions. What would you like to see from P7?

System Shock Remastered Put on Hold
Feb 18, 2018 - 11:14 AM - by Evil Avatar

Sometimes You Need to Take a Step Back in Order to Take Two Steps Forward

In March of 2016, Nightdive Studios released our video of our vision of System Shock Remastered. Done in Unity it was an immediate hit with almost a half million views on YouTube. In June of 2016 we launched a Kickstarter campaign to make the vision into a reality. It was tremendously successful with over 21,000 backers contributing over $1.3 million to the campaign. We put together a development team and began working on the game. But along the way something happened.

Maybe we were too successful. Maybe we lost our focus. The vision began to change. We moved from a Remaster to a completely new game. We shifted engines from Unity to Unreal, a choice that we don’t regret and one that has worked out for us. With the switch we began envisioning doing more, but straying from the core concepts of the original title.

As our concept grew and as our team changed, so did the scope of what we were doing and with that the budget for the game. As the budget grew, we began a long series of conversations with potential publishing partners. The more that we worked on the game, the more that we wanted to do, and the further we got from the original concepts that made System Shock so great.

Ultimately the responsibility for the decisions rests with me. As the CEO and founder of Nightdive Studios, a company that was built on the restoration of the System Shock franchise, I let things get out of control. I can tell you that I did it for all the right reasons, that I was totally committed to making a great game, but it has become clear to me that we took the wrong path, that we turned our backs on the very people who made this possible, our Kickstarter backers.

I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision. We are taking a break, but NOT ending the project. Please accept my personal assurance that we will be back and stronger than ever. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled.

Eugen Systems Employees on Strike
Feb 17, 2018 - 5:38 PM - by Emabulator

GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that almost half of French strategy game maker Eugen Systems' (R.U.S.E., Wargame, Act of Aggression, Steel Division: Normandy 44) developers have walked out claiming labor law violations.

A group of developers at French strategy specialist Eugen Systems has gone on strike. The studio behind Steel Division: Normandy 44 and the Wargame franchise has confirmed that 21 of its 44 employees walked out yesterday afternoon.

According to a post by the striking employees on the website of Le Syndicat des Travailleurs et Travailleuses du Jeu Vidéo, the strike comes after more than a year of problems with management. In particular, the developers allege that Eugen has run afoul of minimum wage laws, neglected to compensate developers for overtime, and refused to recognize contractual obligations with some employees.

Eugen posted a response on its website, saying it respects minimum wage laws and made corrections to payslips on occasions when it was necessary. It did acknowledge an issue with its recent payslips going out late, but attributed the delay to complications caused by recent legislative reforms. It also rejected the suggestion that Eugen employed a crunch culture, saying it once asked three employees to work a Saturday in 2010 to ensure a title's smooth launch, but hasn't done so again.

The strike began a day after Eugen released Back to Hell, the latest expansion of its World War II real-time strategy game Steel Division: Normandy 44.

Civilization VI's New "Flirtatious" and "Curmudgeon" Agendas are Melting Snowflakes
Feb 16, 2018 - 1:17 PM - by Emabulator

Fans of Civilization VI have had a mixed reaction to the new "Flirtatious" and "Curmudgeon" Agendas in the game's Rise and Fall expansion pack. Eurogamer has the story.

The issue centres around Firaxis' addition of more Hidden Agendas for its various leaders, and a couple of those new Agendas in particular: "Flirtatious" and "Curmudgeon". The former means a leader will like other civilizations that have leaders of the opposite sex, and dislike those of the same sex. The latter the opposite: disliking the opposite sex and liking those the same as their own.

If you're not familiar, Agendas are basically the goals, or playstyles, that are given to for each AI-controlled civilization's leader in a game. They come in two forms: fixed agendas that generally suit that leader's overall theme, like Queen Victoria's desire for imperialistic expansion with "Sun Never Sets"; and Hidden Agendas, which are randomly assigned and a bit more light-hearted about adding personality - maybe a leader is "Fun Loving" and wants to keep their citizens well entertained, or "Nuke Happy" and won't hesitate to pelt you with a few ICBMs when the mood takes them. These new ones fall under the latter.

Many fans see these new traits as a bit of fun - and, more importantly, historically accurate fun, given how much the romantic whims of leaders have already shaped the world - but others have noted a couple of problems.

The first complaint, which is frankly a little curmudgeonly itself, is concerned with how it impacts gameplay. In-game, Hidden Agendas also affect that leader's opinion of you, which could in turn affect alliances, trading, and even warfare. Normally you can play around them - if you find out someone is Nuke Happy, for example, then you know they'll like it if you build nuclear weapons yourself, and so you can curry favour by doing so, and so on.

But with Flirtatious and Curmudgeon, you can't. If you're playing as Queen Seondeok of Korea and Alexander the Great is a Curmudgeon, he'll start out disliking you no matter what (and being disliked by Alexander normally means being conquered by him, so it really doesn't help).

The second issue is more significant - Flirtatious leaders only ever hold favourable opinions towards the opposite sex. In other words, they're always straight, and given the fluidity of certain leaders' sexuality in the real world - Alexander the Great himself purportedly had same-sex relationships - that seems like an oversight.

Firaxis has a reputation for holding a more progressive, inclusive view on history, even noting that there was a conscious effort to include some of the more overlooked women and civilizations of history in the Rise and Fall expansion - and so it seemed surprising that they'd miss the mark here.

The ESA Responds To Hawaii's Proposed Legislation On Loot Boxes
Feb 16, 2018 - 9:59 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Earlier this week, Hawaii proposed legislation that would liken loot box implementation in video games to gambling in terms of the level of "psychological, addictive, and financial risks."

The bills are led by representative Chris Lee, who in November announced an investigation into EA's use of loot boxes in games like Star Wars: Battlefront II. The first pair of bills aims to prevent the sale of games that randomize digital rewards to consumers under the age of 21, while the second pair of bills would require that publishers disclose probability rates of obtaining certain items. This legislation has the potential to greatly affect games across the industry, ranging from free-to-play titles all the way up to full-retail juggernauts like Overwatch, Destiny 2, and Star Wars: Battlefront II.

The Entertainment Software Association responded to this proposed legislation through a statement provided to GameIndustry.biz. In the response, the ESA spokesperson affirmed its commitment to industry self-regulation.

"As an industry, we take our responsibility to consumers very seriously and continually work to create greater awareness and transparency about the wide range of in-game experiences," the spokesperson told the outlet. "We strongly believe that the industry's robust, self-regulatory efforts remain the most effective way to address these important issues, and that system has a proven and long record of doing so. Some consumers and parents may have questions about how loot boxes work, and ESA has demonstrated a commitment to providing information to guide consumers, especially parents, in their purchase decisions."

Today, another Hawaii state representative Sean Quinlan came out in support of Lee's proposed bills, saying that this legislation differs from past attempts to regulate violence in video games in that it wouldn't affect the content in games, only a specific mechanism by which content is delivered. "If even mature and intelligent adults are falling victim to these mechanisms, how are kids expected to respond?" Quinlan told GameIndustry.biz.

Mafia III Developer Hangar 13 Hit With Layoffs
Feb 15, 2018 - 4:37 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Hangar 13, the studio responsible for 2016's Mafia III, has been hit with a wave of layoffs. Publisher 2K confirmed the news with GameSpot, though the exact scope of the "staff reductions" is unclear at this point.

"2K can confirm that there have been staff reductions at Hangar 13 in order to ensure that the studio's resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans," a 2K spokesperson said in a statement. "These reductions will not influence 2K's ability to create and deliver its products that are currently in development. We never take these matters lightly, and are working with the affected employees to support them and explore potential opportunities throughout our organization."

The news was originally reported by Kotaku; sources speaking with the site indicated that a "large portion" of the studio's staff have been laid off. At least prior to Mafia III's release, Hangar 13's staff count was in the neighborhood of 150 people.

The trailer is basically an extensive overview of the game, showcasing its story, characters, and many features, including single player, online multiplayer, and local multiplayer for the PS Vita and Nintendo Switch versions. It’s worth mentioning that the port for Sony’s portable isn’t coming that the port for Sony’s portable isn’t coming to the west, so the Switch is the only console getting local multiplayer around here.

The Evil Within 2 Gets First-Person Mode, Now Available for All
Feb 15, 2018 - 11:51 AM - by Evil Avatar

The Evil Within 2 – First-Person Mode Now Available

Right after The Evil Within 2 launched, inquisitive fans discovered something: a first-person mode that was limited to a specific part of the game’s story could be (with some finagling) extended to other areas of the game. The community began clamoring for this feature to be officially extended to the rest of the game, and the development team at Tango Gameworks has listened. The entirety of The Evil Within 2 can now be played in first-person on PS4, Xbox One and PC in a free update.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out The Evil Within 2 and want to try it out before you buy it, you can download the Free Trial and play through the opening chapters of the game. All save data will carry over if you choose to upgrade to the full game. The new first-person mode is also available to try out in the Free Trial. As an added bonus, should you decide you want the full game, you can take advantage of the digital sale and get the game for 50% off. The sale kicks off today and will run through February 19 on Steam and February 20 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

If you already have The Evil Within 2, changing to first-person is as simple as flipping a switch in the menu. You’ll be able to change this at any point, so you can experience the game however you like.

For more on the new mode, we spoke to Producer Shinsaku Ohara about the process and challenges of bringing a first-person perspective to a third-person game.

What made you decide to get this feature working for the whole game?

We experimented a bit with first-person in the full game, but it was more of an afterthought and a little bit of playing around on our side, since we designed the game in third-person.

Some savvy users figured out a way to activate this mode outside of its intended area, and the reaction to it was pretty positive, so we said, “What the heck. Let’s put it in as a bonus for all platforms.” A lot of players like playing horror games in first-person, so for those who want to see some of the game’s situations through Sebastian’s eyes, it’s a really neat experience.

What kind of development work goes into implementing an entirely new POV into a finished game? Did you run into any unique challenges?

The Evil Within 2 wasn’t designed as a first-person game, so obviously it was pretty difficult. We like to think of it as a “high-level hack” so we don’t want people to compare this with DOOM or anything like that. There were some scenes that just didn’t work, so it jumps back and forth a bit to third-person. But we made sure the game’s an enjoyable experience and hopefully people will enjoy playing in this mode.

Do you have a favorite moment to experience in first-person?

I think exploring Union in first-person makes the scale feel even bigger than it does when you’re in third-person. Also, being able to see our environments and enemies up close allows players to get an even better look at how much effort went into their designs.

The Evil Within 2 is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and has received high praise from critics. As Sebastian Castellanos, you’ll have to dive into hell once more in the sequel to the hit 2014 survival horror game from the mind of Shinji Mikami. Take on twisted creatures in horrifying domains and face off against your own worst nightmares as you race to save your daughter.

THQ Nordic Acquires Metro Exodus, Saints Row Parent Company
Feb 14, 2018 - 10:31 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has word that THQ Nordic has acquired Koch Media.

THQ Nordic has acquired Koch Media, the company that owns Saints Row, Dead Island, and Metro Exodus publisher Deep Silver, bringing back former THQ franchises under the same roof.

In the deal, THQ Nordic gets all of Koch/Deep Silver's titles as well as studios Volition (Saints Row/Agents of Mayhem) and Dambuster Studio (Homefront: The Revolution). Koch also owns a European physical games publisher/distributor and a film distributor/co-producer.

The acquisition completes the circle for former THQ titles. When THQ closed and sold off its properties in 2013, Nordic Games not only picked up almost $5 million in THQ games, but also the trademark (changing its name to THQ Nordic in 2016). At the time, Deep Silver bought other THQ IP such as Saints Row (and its developer Volition) and Metro. Now with the purchase of Koch/Deep Silver, THQ Nordic brings all the old THQ properties back together.

Bayonetta 1 & 2 Nintendo Switch Reviews "nothing short of astonishing"
Feb 14, 2018 - 10:20 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot - 10/10

Bayonetta 2's combat is so expertly constructed, and its presentation so joyously insane, that you'd have to try so very hard to get bored of it all. In a year filled with the promise of ever more elaborate experiences on all the shiny new hardware, that Bayonetta 2--a homage to classic game design and escapism--should be the most fun I've had playing a game all year is unexpected. But maybe it shouldn't have been. After all, its predecessor still stands as one of the finest games of its genre. To have surpassed that with Bayonetta 2, and to have created a game that will be remembered as an absolute classic, is nothing short of astonishing.
CGMagazine - 9/10

While one might find it odd that Nintendo is receiving such praise for filling its library with remasters, Bayonetta & Bayonetta 2 feel right at home on the Nintendo Switch, especially with a third installment headed exclusively for the console. If you’ve never played these games, this is the perfect excuse to finally try them.
Trusted Reviews - 4.5/5

Bayonetta 1 and 2 remain a fantastic duo of action titles that feel perfectly at home on Nintendo Switch. Being able to play two of Platinum Games’ finest efforts whenever you like is hugely appealing, and the abundance of content on offer here only makes it even better.

It’s somewhat disheartening that neither game has received any significant improvements beyond amiibo support and slightly better performance, especially since the Switch has proven it’s capable of far more.

Destiny 2 Crimson Days Launches With New Update On PC, PS4, And Xbox One
Feb 13, 2018 - 11:58 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has word on the latest update and Crimson Days event for Destiny 2.

Destiny 2's first Valentine's Day-themed event is officially live. Following a period of server downtime, Bungie has launched a new update that marks the start of the Crimson Days event on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Among other things, that means there are new rewards to now get your hands on.

As outlined recently, Crimson Days centers around a new 2v2 Crucible mode. You can join up solo or with a friend, but either way, you're strongly encouraged to stay physically close to your partner. Doing so causes your abilities to recharge more quickly than usual, while straying far apart will provide the enemy team with waypoints directing them to your location.

Taking part in the Crimson Days playlist is described as the "best" way to earn rewards, though it isn't the only path. Most of the new items are found in the Crimson Engram, which is guaranteed to not decrypt into any duplicates until you've gotten everything it contains. In addition to earning them through the Crucible mode, you'll receive a Crimson Engram (as well as the usual Illuminated Engram) each time you level up, provided you've hit the level cap. You'll also get one just by logging in and speaking with Tess at The Tower.

Deadpool Wishes Josh Brolin a Happy 50th Birthday
Feb 12, 2018 - 2:39 PM - by Emabulator

"Painting you like one of my French girls. Happy Birthday #JoshBrolin" GameSpot has the story.

As is to be expected, given how different Deadpool is from the average superhero movie, the marketing campaign for Deadpool 2 has been quite quirky. That's continued today, with star Ryan Reynolds celebrating the birthday of co-star Josh Brolin.

Brolin is set to play Cable in the upcoming sequel to Deadpool. February 12 marks his 50th birthday, and in heartwarming fashion, Reynolds has commemorated the occasion with a picture he shared on social media. It shows Cable posing for Deadpool, who's meant to be painting a photo of the villain. Instead, he's painting Brolin's character from The Goonies, Brand.

2017 Was A Record Breaking Year For Activision Blizzard
Feb 11, 2018 - 4:04 PM - by Emabulator

MCV has word that Activision Blizzard revealed Q4 2017 was its best ever quarter, topping off its best ever year.

The company blitzed past its $1.7bn forecast for Q4 2017, making $2.04bn over the three months. This contributed to the $7.01bn revenue Activision Blizzard enjoyed for the entire fiscal year. An increase of $400m over FY 2016.

"This was a record quarter to cap off a record year for Activision Blizzard," said Bobby Kotick, chief executive officer of Activision Blizzard. "In 2017, our community reached new milestones for engagement, our business delivered record revenues and cash flows, and we made important progress in building future growth opportunities such as the Overwatch League™. We couldn't be more excited for the opportunities ahead in 2018 to continue serving our players and fans."

During the investor call Activision Blizzard also mentioned a “major expansion” to Destiny 2 for later in the year. This is likely separate to the smaller expansions already announced and hopefully of a similar scale to Destiny’s 2015 expansion The Taken King. With sentiment and player numbers for Destiny 2 at an all time low, a large-scale expansion of the size (and quality) of The Taken King has the potential to fix a lot of issues and bring a lot of players back.

Elsewhere in the financial report Activision Blizzard boasts that “Call of Duty: WWII was the top-grossing console game of the year globally, with the franchise's biggest launch quarter sell-through on current-generation consoles. The game set a Sony PlayStation milestone as the biggest day one digital release ever.” Also that “Destiny 2 was the second-highest-grossing console game in North America for the year, had the largest PC launch in Activision history based on units, and had a higher attach rate on its first expansion than Destiny.”

Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition looks beautiful but at what cost?
Feb 10, 2018 - 12:14 PM - by Emabulator

The Digital Foundry put the Windows version of Final Fantasy XV to the test. The results were interesting, and at times controversial.

One of the joys of PC gaming is the ability to tailor the game experience to your own liking, to strike the best balance between visual features and performance - and that leads us on to what's most exciting us about this PC release. Every console version has its own range of compromises and issues and we've yet to experience the definitive Final Fantasy 15 experience. The best of the bunch is Xbox One X, but even this has some minor frame-rate issues, dynamic scaling that affects image quality and a performance mode that gets nowhere near to a locked 60 frames per second. If you want native 4K, or if you'd prefer 60fps (yes we managed it as the video on this page proves - albeit with monster hardware in play) the PC version offers the best route forward.

Professional Bad Guy Mark Strong Promises DC's Shazam! Will Bring the Laughs
Feb 09, 2018 - 1:50 PM - by Emabulator

There will be laughter, of some kind. Shazam! GamesRadar has the story.

Few people do villainy as well as Mark Strong, who you'll instantly recognize from Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Stardust. So it's good to know he'll be giving us full bad guy in DC's Shazam! movie, currently in production. In an interview with Total Film, Strong revealed that this particular DC outing has a lighter side.

"Zachary Levi, who plays the lead [Shazam, the superhero alter ego of Billy Batson], is a very funny guy, and I’ve no doubt he will play with that part and make it interesting," he says. "I think DC have realized that they’ve got their canon of films that are dark, and they’ve now found one that’s pretty funny! There are some really funny moments in it."

Of course, this isn't Strong's first dip in the DC pool. Back in 2001, he starred in Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds, playing the fallen Green Lantern Corps member Sinestro. Sadly, the movie flopped.

"Sinestro was meant to go evil in the second one," explains Strong. "The final frame of the first film is him trying on the yellow ring and his whole costume going yellow, and that was when he went evil. So I was really looking forward to that. The film didn’t do as well as they expected… so it never got made. So I was definitely conscious that Sivana is almost like the next stage that I wasn’t able to take."

Monster Hunter World Sets A New All-Time Capcom Sales Record
Feb 09, 2018 - 1:28 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot is reporting that Capcom has shipped over six million copies of Monster Hunter World in just a few weeks.

Monster Hunter World is notable in a number of ways. It was the first new core Monster Hunter entry to appear on consoles in the better part of a decade and--while still challenging--it's more welcoming of newcomers than previous installments. Through its first two weeks, those decisions have paid off.

Capcom announced last month that Monster Hunter World enjoyed the strongest first three days of any entry in the series, with 5 million units shipped worldwide across PS4 and Xbox One. As of February 9, that figure has now reached 6 million units--something it's done faster than any game in Capcom's history, according to the publisher. Bear in mind, this number accounts for digital sales and the number of units shipped to retailers (but not necessarily sold through to consumers).

The series record came as little surprise, given that the game launched for PS4 and Xbox One, the combined install base of which eclipsed 3DS, which recent entries were exclusive to. World also had the benefit of a simultaneous worldwide launch, thereby bolstering its launch sales figures. Nonetheless, it's clear that interest in the new RPG has been strong.

Fortnite Hits 3.4 Million Concurrent Users On Same Weekend Of Server Outages
Feb 08, 2018 - 6:22 PM - by Emabulator

Epic tales of Epic Games' smash hit shooter Fortnite from GameSpot.

Fortnite, the stylized shooter from Gears of War creator Epic Games, has reached a new player milestone. Over the weekend, on Super Bowl Sunday, the game hit a new record of 3.4 million concurrent players, Epic announced in a blog post this week.

By comparison, that's ahead of the 3 million peak concurrent players that PUBG reached in January. The big difference, however, is that Fortnite's concurrent figure almost certainly covers all platforms--PS4, Xbox One, and PC--while PUBG's was for PC alone.

Still, 3.4 million concurrent users is a huge number and it speaks to the ongoing popularity of Epic's game. The developer did not provide a breakdown of how that figure is divided between the paid Fortnite base game and the free-to-play Battle Royale mode, but it can be safely assumed that Battle Royale has the bulk of the players.

Fortnite's newest player milestone is all the more notable when you consider that the game ran into some serious and significant issues recently. In a frank blog post, Epic talked about how the "extreme" server load led to six different incidents on Saturday and Sunday, which in some instances included "total service disruptions" for the game.

Former S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Devs Announce Battle Royale Game 'Fear the Wolves'
Feb 08, 2018 - 8:49 AM - by Evil Avatar

Focus Home Interactive and former S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers announce Fear the Wolves, a post-apocalyptic Battle Royale game for 2018!

In development for several months, Focus Home Interactive and Vostok Games – the developers who created the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise – chose the annual press event “Le What’s Next de Focus” taking place in Paris on February 7-8, to unveil Fear The Wolves, the post-apocalyptic First Person Shooter Battle Royale. Releasing in 2018, the game will offer a new and original take on the growing Battle Royale genre.

Fear the Wolves drops players, in squads or as lone wolves, into the oppressive environments of a radiation-ravaged Chernobyl. The classic Battle Royale mode forces them to fight to be the last man standing out of 100 fighters. Another intense and original game mode will also bring a fierce new twist to the genre.

To secure the top spot, players will need to worry about more than just other survivors. Across the hostile wastes, everyone is threatened by deadly anomalies and the dynamically-changing weather. Along with a day-night cycle, this constantly forces survivors to adapt their strategies, and players can find protective gear that allows them to explore dangerous off-limit zones. All the while, the howls of mutated creatures echo through the wasteland...

More details on Fear the Wolves will be unveiled to attendees at the What’s Next de Focus press event in Paris, February this year. Developers at Vostok Games will be available for interviews and presentations to share more information about their upcoming hardcore Battle Royale shooter.

Fear the Wolves comes to PC and Consoles in 2018. Early Access begins this year on PC.

Downward Spiral: Horus Station Announced for PS4 and PC
Feb 08, 2018 - 8:42 AM - by Evil Avatar

High-Concept Sci-Fi Thriller Downward Spiral: Horus Station Descends on to PlayStation 4 and PC this SpringG

Independent game and technology studio, 3rd Eye Studios is releasing its zero-gravity space adventure, Downward Spiral: Horus Station, this Spring on PlayStation 4 and PC, with optional PlayStation VR, Oculus Touch, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality support. Downward Spiral: Horus Station lures players through a lost vessel abandoned by its crew. Solving the mystery of the space station will take wits and ingenuity as you fight or avoid dangers unknown. Use the ship's maintenance hardware - like bolt throwers, rail guns, and arc welders to take out threats, solve puzzles and find the truth of why Horus Station has been left drifting in space.

Downward Spiral: Horus Station’s focus will be heavy on environmental storytelling, as the game features no dialogue or cinematics. Instead, players will have to piece together the plot through observation and interpretation as they navigate the derelict space station, accompanied by the electronic ambient soundtrack composed by platinum selling HIM frontman Ville Valo.

Additionally, 3rd Eye Studios is introducing an innovative control system that rethinks how movement works in zero-gravity. Rather than just float, players will have to push themselves off of the environment to propel themselves forward, or use tools just as they would in deep space.

The game also features a raft of options for how to experience it. Not only is it playable on both a regular screen and VR headset, the game is also playable in two player co-op, allowing players to explore the Horus Station’s deceptively immaculate, retro-futurist decor as an investigative duo. There’s also the option to entirely remove combat from the campaign for those who wish to soak up the story without enemies. In addition to Horus Station’s story campaign, there’s eight-player PvP and PvE multiplayer modes including Deathmatch, Horde and Survivor challenges.

“Inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, Twin Peaks, and There Will be Blood, Downward Spiral: Horus Station offers a thought-provoking piece of hard sci-fi set in deep space,” said Gregory Louden, Lead Designer of 3rd Eye Studios.

“Last year’s Downward Spiral: Prologue was our proof of concept. Now we’re almost ready to let players embark on a full-length adventure to discover the atmospheric Horus Station,” said Kari Koivistoinen, CEO of 3rd Eye Studios. “For those that wish to experience the game in VR, we’ve continued to develop our proprietary tech that mitigates VR motion sickness while allowing for a full range of movement. Movement is seamless, allowing players to engage in both thoughtful exploration and pulse-quickening combat.”

Rumor: Bandai Namco Working On Switch-Exclusive FPS And Ridge Racer 8
Feb 07, 2018 - 2:42 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer is spreading the rumor that Bandai Namco is working on a Switch-Exclusive FPS And Ridge Racer 8.

Late last night, a LinkedIn profile was discovered of a developer at Bandai Namco, which seemingly spilled a lot of beans about the company's upcoming projects.

The LinkedIn bio made reference to several projects past and present, as is the point of the resume-oriented website, but also tipped its hand on games that have yet to be announced. In one instance, the profile references an "Unannounced IP (First Person Shooter/Adventure Exclusive to the Nintendo Switch)," which is very specific wording.

Another listing outright refers to Ridge Racer 8, a game which has not been announced in any capacity from Bandai Namco, and details it as a "drift-based high speed car racing [game] exclusive to the Nintendo Switch."

While now removed from the profile, his accomplishments have referenced leading meetings for both Bandai Namco and presentations to Nintendo, as well as recent work modernizing the user interface in older games for current standards. Bandai Namco has been heavily speculated as Nintendo's partner for Metroid Prime 4, just as they were for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, which would fit the "First-Person Adventure" distinction fairly well.

In November last year, Bandai Namco said that they are planning three "big" Switch exclusives for 2018, but did not give any details on the titles. The Singapore studio is primarily made up of LucasArts developers, including the former Star Wars 1313 team.

Star Wars: Several New TV Shows In Development, Says Disney
Feb 07, 2018 - 2:24 PM - by Emabulator

May the Force Stream with You. GameSpot has the news from the dark side.

Disney launches its streaming service in 2019, and as well as making many of its movies and TV shows available, the studio is planning to develop new shows exclusively for the service. Inevitably one of these is to be a Star Wars live-action series. Disney boss Bob Iger has now revealed that the studio is in fact developing more than one Star Wars show.

During Disney's quarterly investors call, Iger stated that it won't be long before we get more details about the studio's plans. "We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct to consumer app," he said, via Collider. "We've mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn't completely closed, we can't be specific about that, [but] I think you'll find the level of talent on the television front will be rather significant as well."

Rainbow Six Siege’s Operation Chimera Brings New Operators, First Co-Op Event
Feb 06, 2018 - 5:40 PM - by Emabulator

Details courtesy of PlayStation.Blog.

Starting March 6, Operation Chimera is going to heat up (you know, because chimeras breathe fire) the competition for Rainbow Six Siege players on PlayStation 4. The first in a series of content updates for Year 3 of Rainbow Six Siege, Operation Chimera features two new Operators from French and Russian counter-terrorism units. Like the Operators before them, these new Operators will come with loadouts and special gadgets that make them uniquely suited for various tactical scenarios that can arise over the course of a Rainbow Six Siege match.

Some of you may have noticed something different about this particular pair of Operators, which makes them stand out from their other CTU counterparts. That’s because they’re biohazard specialists, and for good reason: Operation Chimera not only includes these two Operators, but also a new cooperative event called Outbreak, in which these new Operators will join Smoke, Ying, Buck, Kapkan, Ash, Doc, Tachanka, Glaz, and the Recruit in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico to contain an extraterrestrial parasite in its quarantine zone, and prevent it from turning more of the locals into gruesome Apex monsters.

“With Outbreak, we wanted to celebrate Rainbow Six Siege’s third birthday by introducing a big change from Operations we have released in the past,” says Alexandre Remy, Brand Director for Rainbow Six Siege. “We took the key ingredients and mechanics of Siege and placed them in a different context, designing a three-player co-op experience, with a surprising environment, to say the least…”

Outbreak is a free four-week event that starts March 6, and a team of three Operators will be able to tackle it on two difficulty settings: Normal and Pandemic. Normal will be tough for players unless they use teamwork and communication to survive, but Pandemic will push any team to their limits – enemies will pack an extra punch, and friendly fire will be turned on. In either case, the Apex are relentless and will do everything to bust down walls, tear down your defenses, and invade your personal space with extreme prejudice as your team fights through three expansive maps designed for co-op.

Game of Thrones Creators to Write New Star Wars Film Series
Feb 06, 2018 - 5:12 PM - by Emabulator

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are set to create a new Star Wars film series.

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are joining the Star Wars galaxy.

The duo will write and produce a new series of films, Disney and Lucasfilm announced Tuesday.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

The new film series will be separate from the trilogy that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is developing, and will also stand alone from the Skywalker Saga, which J.J. Abrams is working on with the upcoming Episode IX. No release dates have been set for the series from the HBO power duo.

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

Benioff and Weiss' Star Wars involvement immediately puts the future of HBO's controversial slave drama Confederate in question. The duo were set to write and serve as showrunners on the straight-to-series drama alongside Nichelle Tramble Spellman (Justified, The Good Wife) and Malcolm Spellman (Empire), who will also serve as writers.

The concept of the show — which takes place in an alternate timeline where the Southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution — immediately drew controversy. That series was eyed to launch in either 2018 or 2019, after Benioff and Weiss completed their work on the final season of Thrones.

With the delay of Thrones' final season as well as their involvement in Star Wars — for which there is no timetable — the future of the project remains murky. HBO did not immediately respond for comment on the future of Confederate.

Focus Home Interactive Announces 'Space Hulk: Tactics'
Feb 06, 2018 - 4:48 PM - by Emabulator

Focus Home Interactive sends along a press release announcing Cyanide Studio's upcoming turn-based tactical game, Space Hulk: Tactics.

February 2, 2018 - After successfully bringing Blood Bowl, the classic board game by Games Workshop, to Consoles and PC with two faithful adaptations, Cyanide Studio is proud to take on another fan favourite from the Warhammer 40,000 universe with their turn-based tactical game, Space Hulk: Tactics!

Bringing a unique twist to the classic gameplay of the cult board game, engage in bloody battles through an immense Space Hulk - a twisted mass of asteroids, wrecked ships and debris – as either a squad of Terminator Space Marines or the deadly alien Genestealers. Which side will you choose?

Battle through two distinct, narrative-driven campaigns, from the points of view of two different factions: one campaign puts you in control of a Blood Angels squad, which you will customise and upgrade as you progress, while the other puts you in control of the Genestealers for the first time in a Space Hulk game!

Space Hulk: Tactics is based on the rules of the popular board game, given a fresh new spin in the form of the unique Card system. Cards give more ways to customize your squad before a match, and allow you to turn the tides of battle with abilities that trigger game-changing effects when used at the right moment.

Test your skills against other players in the expansive online competitive multiplayer, letting you command a swarm of Genestealers or a custom squad of different unit types from one of four Space Marine Chapters – the Blood Angels, the Space Wolves, the Ultramarines, and the Dark Angels. Multiplayer modes and tools offer a rich and deep online experience, and include an intuitive map creation tool, which gives players everything they need to create original maps with custom objective, and share them with other players to play either online or against the AI, all from within the game!

Space Hulk: Tactics comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2018. More information will be unveiled in February at Le What’s Next de Focus press event in Paris.

Eurogamer is reporting that the next Call of Duty title will be Black Ops 4. Which comes as no surprise with Black Ops developer Treyarch next in line for the series. There's also a chance the series could be heading to Nintendo Switch, something Eurogamer is still trying to confirm. I'm guessing Raven will be doing some work on the game as well, as has been the case with the series for a while now.

This year's Call of Duty game is Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, multiple sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

Black Ops 4 is in development at Treyarch, the Activision studio behind the three other Black Ops games, and as you'd expect is due for launch late in the year.

The Black Ops storyline so far has covered the Cold War, near future, and a further time period in 2065. In particular, Black Ops 3 had a fully sci-fi focus - something which Black Ops 4 will dial back to better fit the series' recent desire for a more grounded feeling - in response to the negative feedback surrounding 2016's space-set Infinite Warfare.

Word of Black Ops 4 first appeared online this week in a Twitter post from self-styled "industry insider" Marcus Sellars. In a series of posts made over the past few days, Sellars also referenced a Nintendo Switch version of Black Ops 4 was in development - a detail we're still working to verify.

World of WarCraft's New Leveling System And Allied Races Discussed By Blizzard
Feb 05, 2018 - 6:59 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

World of Warcraft, one of the most enduringly successful and engaging MMOs in the history of the genre that it basically defined, is still truckin' along with a new expansion, Battle for Azeroth, coming this summer. GameSpot recently had the opportunity to speak with senior game designer Paul Kubit and producer Shani Edwards about two of the biggest new elements of the game and expansion: level-scaling and Allied Races.

Level-scaling in World of Warcraft was added in the recent 7.3.5 patch for all players. Previously limited to Legion's zones, this sweeping new feature is now available across most of the game. What it means is that the level of creatures and quests scale to the level of the player. In turn, this means you can party up and play together with friends, regardless of your level, all the while earning level-appropriate rewards for your accomplishments.

Kubit told GameSpot that players have responded really well so far to the new level-scaling system, adding that now is an opportune time to release it more widely with the new Allied races out now and the expansion due out soon. Fixed leveling was problematic and could lead to gameplay experiences that were not as fun and engaging as they could be, Kubit acknowledged.

Fixed leveling led to a more scripted experience because you could only play through level-appropriate zones instead of having free reign, Kubit said.

"In the past, what you had to do with fixed levelling was you had to go to one of three zones that was the correct level for you and then go to this one and this one. It was very scripted."

"It didn't offer a lot of choice."

But with level-scaling, you can now freely move through Azeroth and carve your own path instead of being forced down one particular path.
