Forbes: The New Atari Console Is Called The 'Atari VCS' And I Still Don't Get It

Forbes: The New Atari Console Is Called The 'Atari VCS' And I Still Don't Get It

What does this mean? The system will have classic Atari content but it's more than a retro device and it will 'change the way you interact with your TV." How will it do this? It seems like a very bold promise with very few details to back it up.

But nothing about this console screams 'innovation' at me. If anything, I'm reminded of all the talk about the Ouya back when it landed on Kickstarter promising to "disrupt" the gaming industry. It didn't quite go down like that.

So what will make Atari's new system stand out other than brand recognition? The system has a custom AMD processor and runs a version of Linux, meaning it will be able to play some PC games as well as retro Atari titles, but that alone isn't enough to really make a splash in the gaming market. It has a retro design that evokes the old Atari 2600 but that's only going to appeal to a niche audience at this point.

I suppose some people will be excited to play those old Atari games, but there's no way this will be as popular or in-demand as Nintendo's mini retro NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition.

God of War Previews: "Kratos is still angry" "feels much more modern"
Mar 19, 2018 - 8:35 AM - by Emabulator

IGN: God of War's First 3 Hours Are Way More Emotional Than We Expected

Mechanically, God of War feels much more modern than its predecessors, opting for a minimal HUD instead of flashing combo numbers on screen, and leaning into melee-based combat that’s more reminiscent of Dark Souls than it is God of War. Combat encounters in the first few hours seamlessly teach you the value of being aggressive, using your shield to parry, and strategically prioritizing targets, none of which feels anything like what’s come before.

And yet in close quarters, there are still shades of the same Kratos. When you finally lower your shield and find the right window to attack, you can still chain together combos of heavy and light blows, even without numbers and glowing orbs surrounding you on-screen. It feels like an authentic growth for a man who spent countless years fighting but has honed his skills with age.
GameSpot: God Of War PS4 Gameplay Shows Huge Differences From Previous Games

Ever since God of War was revealed for PS4, it's been clear the game would differ from its predecessors in the series. It appeared to have a slower pace, combat seemed vastly different, and Kratos now had a son! As it turns out, those assumptions are true: the game does feel unlike anything the series has seen before.

We recently got to check out the action title's opening couple of hours, and in the video above you can watch resident God of War expert Tamoor Hussain and series newcomer Dave Jewitt discuss what they saw. There's also some great gameplay of Kratos's new ice axe and shield combination.
Eurogamer: God of War has grown up, but Kratos is still reassuringly furious

Kratos is still angry. If you're concerned about how much has changed in Sony Santa Monica's reboot of the God of War series, it's worth knowing this; in two hours playing the game, what's remarkable is how much has stayed the same. There's the same pent up rage, unleashed in pliable combat as enemies are juggled in the air and then pulled furiously apart, the same cinematic showdowns that dazzle with their panache. The same spectacle, and the same sense that the host hardware is being pushed to its very limit. It's a God of War game alright, in that it's hard to think of any better showcase for what's possible with Sony's console.

And yet so much else has changed. The camera, for one, which now follows closely behind Kratos' shoulder, in a shift that can be likened to that the Resident Evil series underwent between its third and fourth installments. The fundamentals of God of War's combat survive the shift, even if there's been some significant changes. There's a certain inelegance that wasn't there before - during a boss fight with the towering Daudi Kaupmadr, it's hard to see some of its more savage moves being telegraphed when you're stuck staring at its legs, while when you're facing larger mobs of enemies you'll find yourself relying on a threat indicator that circles Kratos and shows where the off-screen danger is coming from.
Digital Foundry: God of War is PS4's next big tech showcase

A studio with a remarkable heritage for technical excellence, Sony Santa Monica is closing in on completion of its latest God of War and this past week, we've finally had the opportunity to see more of the game in action via PlayStation 4 Pro's pristine 4K video output. Right away, it's clear that what's on display here is extremely promising. God of War should comfortably stand alongside the likes of Uncharted 4 and Horizon: Zero Dawn when it comes to the quality of its technology.

For this latest round of God of War marketing, we managed to get hold of a high quality 4K feed of the new batch of gameplay. Like Horizon, God of War is using a form of checkerboard rendering to reach a 2160p pixel count. It certainly looks clean in motion, and while our pixel counts revealed nothing other than a 2160p output, the PlayStation Blog reveals that dynamic resolution scaling is in effect.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Lootboxes Go Cosmetic Only, is it Too Little Too Late?
Mar 18, 2018 - 9:24 AM - by Emabulator

GamesRadar: After heavy criticism, Star War Battlefront 2 lootboxes go cosmetic only - but is it too little too late?

In a perfect world, Star Wars Battlefront 2 would have been known for its gorgeous graphics, exciting gameplay, and an enjoyable single-player campaign. In the real world, any positives the game had going for it were quickly overshadowed by accusations of predatory and extreme implementation of lootboxes.

Publisher EA is taking steps to remedy that, and changes are set to go live on March 21. But now that the game has been out for several months, is it too little, too late? Let's take a look at what's changing in the Battlefront 2 Progression Update.

Linear progression

In our Battlefront 2 review, we called the game's progression system "confusing". In the original version of the game, players progressed through a combination of Star Cards (of which there were two types and four levels of rarity), character XP, and three different currencies. It was overstuffed and under explained, resulting in many players feeling like they weren't really moving upward at all. Maybe sideways, but not up.

The Progression Update keeps Star Cards an important of the progression experience, but no longer will you be receiving them from crates with randomized rewards. Instead, as you gain experience with your class, hero, or ship, you'll accumulate skill points. These skill points in turn can unlock or upgrade the Star Card you want to equip. It's a lot closer to, say, planning your path down an RPG skill tree than relying on vague hope that you get the Star Card you want.

Note that anything you've already unlocked via the current Battlefront 2 progression system will remain unlocked; all Star Cards, heroes, weapons, and anything else you've already got on your account will still be yours.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 Coming To PS4 In North America This Year
Mar 18, 2018 - 9:04 AM - by Emabulator

The Dragon of Dojima and Mad Dog of Shimano are heading to PS4 in North America. GameSpot has the story.

On the heels of the Western release of Kazuma Kiryu's last chapter with Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Sega has announced that we'll soon be able to relive the earlier days--Yakuza Kiwami 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 in North America on August 28, 2018. The Japanese version, called Ryu ga Gotoku: Kiwami 2, has been out since December 2017, but the localized version is now on the way. Kiwami 2 is the remake of the original Yakuza 2 that came out for the PlayStation 2 back in 2006 (Japan) and 2008 (North America).

Yakuza 2 picks up one year after the events of the original game where Kiryu finds himself stuck in inter-clan drama yet again. Turmoil inside the Omi Alliance (rivals of Kiryu's own Tojo Clan), turns animosity into a war in the streets of series-long home Kamurocho. This is all thanks to a coup within Omi led by the main villain Ryuji Goda. The son of an old Tojo chairman has to return to the yakuza lifestyle to protect the families, with plenty of help from Kiryu of course. And the beloved, yet unhinged Goro Majima also has to pitch in to keep the clan afloat.

Familiar faces like Makoto Date, Osamu Kashiwagi, Haruka Sawamura are central characters to the plot, alongside the Osakan detective Kaoru Sayama who makes her series debut to keep a sharp eye on Kiryu. This is only the setup for the rollercoaster ride that is Yakuza 2.

A completely new addition in Kiwami 2 is a whole campaign called The Truth of Goro Majima where we get to play as the man himself and uncover how he became a construction business tycoon just before the events of Yakuza 2. Playing as Majima was a highlight in the prequel Yakuza 0, and fans got to peer into the personal life of one of the series' most distinguishable characters.

Fight Over Pokémon Go Gym Inspires Washington Man To Attack Players With A Tire Iron
Mar 17, 2018 - 4:09 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Pokémon Go-related mishaps and real-life incidents were all the rage when the game was on top of the world back in 2016, as the game's millions of players began meeting each other, for better or worse. Well, some idiot decided to bring that "magic" into 2018 in the worst way possible.

Washington TV Station KATU reports that while Go players Andrew Otton and Grayson Hagstrom were hanging with a friend at Vancouver's Burnt Bridge Creek Trail, someone parked their car near them, got out, and started charging them with a tire iron.

"He comes out of nowhere, yelling, 'WHICH ONE OF YOU IS ANDY?' with a tire iron in his hand," Otton told KATU. Otton's name in Go is AndySamberg. The man with the tire iron, who court records reveal is named Stephen Jolly, was looking for Otton because as Olly was attempting to take a nearby gym, Otton was disputing it. "I was just reviving my Pokemon when he was trying to take it out.," Otton said. "I took it from him, and I didn't know he just took it, and he was like, 'Hey did you just take this gym from me? That's pretty messed up man.' He was very angrily saying it."

What happened next is a bit of a toss-up. Jolly admits he hit a table with the tire iron, but disputes Otton and Hagstrom's report that he punched Hagstrom several times. Hagstrom then defended himself after realizing the best defense is a good offense. "I got behind him and started choking him," Hagstro told KATU. "I figured if he didn't have consciousness, he wouldn't be that tough."

PUBG Xbox One performance still isn't good enough
Mar 17, 2018 - 1:31 PM - by Emabulator

The Digital Foundry at Eurogamer has declared Playerunknown's Battlegrounds unfit for duty on Xbox One.

In its recent Spring Xbox PUBG Roadmap, Bluehole provides a candid and eye-opening admission about the state of the game. "To put it bluntly, we are simply not satisfied with the game's current console performance," the statement says. "Especially so during tense moments of onscreen action."

A couple of months have passed since our last PUBG Xbox analysis and new patches continue to roll out, so in reassessing the game, we did our most comprehensive tests yet - we captured and analysed over 90 minutes of action from both Xbox One and Xbox One X, buddying up in the same online game instances to ensure that conditions between the two consoles were as like-for-like as possible. Rather than extracting a selection of clips from the captures as we've done in the past, everything we played was analysed - the idea being to ensure that we missed nothing, while also giving us an idea of how the flow of an entire session played out.

What's clear is that there have been some improvements. Our first impressions of Xbox PUBG back in the day were marred by terrible performance in the game's lobby areas and when jumping to the carrier ready for deployment. Both aspects here see a boost, with a closer lock to the target 30 frames per second marred only by PUBG's signature massive stutter when players transition to the carrier. The developers have also added additional lobbies too, though in common with the crashed plane area, texture streaming here is still rather slow. Rubber-banding or 'micro-teleporting' is also a non-issue now - during our testing period, anyway. Previously, simple tasks like walking through a door could prove challenging, but things are clearly much improved now.

You can either help them out or explore for artifacts, new weapons, blueprints and transmissions all of which will help you in your quest. Soulcalibur VI Welcomes Geralt of Rivia as Guest Character

Bandai Namco Entertainment and creators of The Witcher games series CD Projekt RED, announce Geralt of Rivia will be joining the playable character roster of the long-waited weapon-based 3D fighting game Soulcalibur VI.

Geralt was trained at the elite School of the Wolf and is considered one of the deadliest monster slayers. He possesses superhuman reflexes and strength, as well as superior sword fighting skills. Players who choose to fight as Geralt will utilise The Witcher’s signature fighting style with a combination of swordplay, ability-enhancing potions, and combat magic. Doug Cockle, the English voice of Geralt of Rivia, returns in Soulcalibur VI to reprise the role. Gamers will also be able to fight in Kaer Morhen, home keep of the School of the Wolf. Accompanying players in battle will be “Hunt or be Hunted”, an iconic composition from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt soundtrack.

“Soulcalibur is well known in the fighting games genre for including iconic guest characters. When we were approached with the idea of doing a crossover, we thought our community would really enjoy playing as the witcher,” said Marcin Momot, Community Lead at CD Projekt RED. “We’ve collaborated with Bandai Namco artists to faithfully recreate Geralt, and shared original Witcher 3 assets like Geralt’s model, animations, and weapons. I think Bandai Namco did an outstanding job of capturing all the details and introducing The Witcher to Soulcalibur in a way fans of both series will enjoy,” added Marcin Momot.

“All Soulcalibur characters have strong convictions and complex backgrounds and this is why it is a great honor for the whole Soulcalibur team to welcome Geralt as the guest character in Soulcalibur VI.” Said Soulcalibur producer, Motohiro Okubo. “Thanks to the great cooperation with CD Proket RED, we’ve been able to fully integrate Geralt’s fighting style and appearance. We can’t wait for Soulcalibur fans around the world to welcome Geralt to the stage of History.”

The legendary weapon-based 3D fighting game returns to its roots. Soulcalibur VI has never looked more dynamic or dramatic, intensified with eye-popping graphics powered by Unreal Engine 4. Travel through the signature 16th century stages and experience the struggle for the two legendary swords using a complete roster of returning iconic Soulcalibur characters including Mitsurugi Sophitia, along with Kilik, Nightmare, Ivy and some newcomers!

Videogame publisher Rising Star Games today announced it has entered into a partnership with Portugal-based developer Amplify Creations, to publish the third-person fantasy action-RPG Decay of Logos on digital storefronts across all major gaming formats in autumn 2018.

Decay of Logos is an immersive action role-playing game inspired by the developer’s love and passion for European folklore, high fantasy fiction and archetypal classic third-person action-RPG videogames. The game hails from the imagination of lead game designer and programmer André Constantino and is developed by award-winning independent software organization Amplify Creations.

The game sees players exploring a vast interconnected world, packed with secret locations and items to discover. Adventurers will engage in deadly and punishing combat with other-worldly enemy constructs, and discover a world filled with arcane lore as they unravel the intricacies of the game’s various weapon, armour, inventory and level-up systems and mechanics.

Decay of Logos weaves a tale of a girl and her elk companion, who meet after her village is destroyed by one of the King’s sons. Battered and oblivious of the culprit behind the attack, the girl will not rest until she has her revenge. During her quest she will unveil secrets about the King and his sons, slowly realising that all is not what it seems.

Take a peek behind the curtain at the ongoing development of the game and follow the Amplify Creations team’s development blog at decayoflogos.com.

GameSpot and IGN's Tomb Raider Movie Reviews
Mar 14, 2018 - 11:21 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot: A Great Video Game Adaptation

The new Tomb Raider is a pretty good action movie and a better than average video game adaptation, with a stunning performance from Oscar winner Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. What really elevates it, though, are a couple of extremely specific story and design decisions that set it apart from all its contemporaries, from Indiana Jones and Uncharted to past Tomb Raider games and movies.

To say exactly where the story goes that makes Tomb Raider so unique would be a spoiler, but let's just say it stays surprisingly grounded.

That's a word you can apply to more or less the whole movie. Much of the action is heightened to unbelievable proportions, though no more so than in the 2013 Tomb Raider game, which was widely praised for its "gritty realism." The movie is a direct adaptation of that game, and it more than does it justice, even surpassing it in many ways.
IGN: More like Tomb Later.

At its best, Tomb Raider is a passable action movie. It has some cool fight scenes and a neat tomb to raid. But this iteration of iconic adventurer Lara Croft misses the mark by reducing her identity to her relationship with her missing father and her physical prowess. This movie may directly lift many elements from the excellent 2013 video game reboot, but it disappointingly chooses not to adapt what made Lara an interesting and deep character.

Click on the Headline for the Trailer.

Legends have told of an elite group of warriors known as Sentinels, the only humans capable of defeating the dreadful giant beasts called Ravenii. Eventually, these legends faded to myth and were only spoken about in children’s fairy tales. As time went on, people no longer warred against monsters but instead turned to battling one another.

Now the unthinkable has occurred: the Ravenii have returned to this land through strange, arcane portals, with bloodthirsty new allies trailing in their wake. Avil, the last of the ancient order – and the hero you will play – must use everything in his arsenal to slow the oncoming storm and rescue as many people as possible in the land of Dolorum.

Dolorum is besieged on all fronts and Extinction's campaign tells the story of the Ravenii's relentless march through the country. Avil and his ally, Xandra, have to work together with King Yarrow to try and stem the tide. Meanwhile, humanity is making one last-ditch effort to understand the Ravenii and to make the alien technology their own. Failure here means the end of everything.

Extinction will launch on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One and PC on April 10, 2018 and is available to pre-order now!

Stephen Hawking Travels to a New Dimension After 76 Years
Mar 13, 2018 - 11:12 PM - by vallor
According to the BBC (and pretty much whatever news source you choose) Stephen Hawking passed on today, dying at the age of 76.

As a teenager he had enjoyed horse-riding and rowing but while at Cambridge he was diagnosed with a form of motor neurone disease which was to leave him almost completely paralysed.

As he was preparing to marry his first wife, Jane, in 1964 his doctors gave him no more than two or three years of life.

But the disease progressed more slowly than expected. The couple had three children, and in 1988 - although Hawking was by now only able to speak with a voice synthesiser following a tracheotomy - he had completed A Brief History of Time - a layman's guide to cosmology.

It sold more than 10 million copies, although its author was aware that it was dubbed "the most popular book never read".
Not games related but Hawking is one of a kind.
He wasn't perfect by any stretch, and he was even wrong now and then, but he was one of of those who helped moved the human race forward.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - Official Teaser Trailer
Mar 13, 2018 - 6:03 PM - by Evil Avatar

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

The film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp. The cast also includes, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Carmen Ejogo, and Poppy Corby-Tuech.

“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film is produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.

Slated for release on November 16, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Former Halo, Battlefield Devs Announce Scavengers, A Third-Person Shooter
Mar 13, 2018 - 5:59 PM - by Evil Avatar

Midwinter Entertainment Announces Funding and Technology Partnership with Improbable and Unveils Flagship Title, Scavengers

Josh Holmes, formerly Studio Head and Creative Director for the Halo franchise at 343 Industries, today took the new game studio, Midwinter Entertainment, out of stealth with the announcement of its flagship game, Scavengers.

Midwinter also announced a partnership with Improbable, which will include both project funding to support the making of Scavengers and a deep technical relationship. Midwinter’s work will help to inform the future development of tools and workflows for SpatialOS, Improbable’s cloud-based platform for game development.

Scavengers will build on the game design principles that made Halo 5’s Warzone a revolutionary new mode for Halo players, by allowing teams of players to compete with one another while exploring a large game map populated with hundreds of free-roaming and highly sophisticated AI enemies, with distinct factions, weapons and behaviours.

The multiplayer “co-opetition” survival shooter will be built with Unreal Engine and powered by Improbable’s SpatialOS game development platform. With these technologies, Scavengers will provide endless emergent gameplay possibilities resulting from the interplay of human competitors and AI adversaries within a large, living world.

“We started Midwinter with the goal of creating innovative, shared experiences for millions of players around the world,” says Josh Holmes, CEO of Midwinter Entertainment. “When we introduced Warzone in Halo 5, it represented the pinnacle of blended PVE/PVP. Now with SpatialOS, we have the ability to push the boundaries of ‘co-opetition’ gameplay in Scavengers, with teams of players competing as armies of smart AI move intelligently across the map, hunting down players and each other.”

Massive-AI “Co-opetition” - Intense, team-based multiplayer in a dynamic, living world

Scavengers puts players in the role of young survivors fighting in a not-so-distant future, where cataclysmic events have triggered a new ice age. The game will combine exploration, survival and combat elements, while maintaining a focus on teamwork and cooperative game mechanics.

By dividing the action between multiple servers in the cloud, all of which contribute to building and running a seamless and consistent world, SpatialOS allows more sophisticated artificial intelligence, more AI entities and players occupying a seamless, shared environment, and a larger, more detailed and more deeply simulated game world than can be supported by the traditional client-server architecture used in online gaming.

Players will begin each game by equipping their scavenger, exploring the wilds, fighting and allying with other human players to complete objectives, gathering resources and battling against AI-controlled enemy factions. Large and unpredictable AI populations, combined with the balance of co-operation and competition between the human players, will create rich, repeatable gameplay.

Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire Delayed Until May
Mar 13, 2018 - 1:19 PM - by Emabulator

Obsidian has announced that Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire has been delayed from April to May. Game Informer:

Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity set a high bar for classic-style RPGs when it released in 2015. Considering its warm reception, it shouldn't come as a surprise that fans have been clamoring for another game in that universe. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire looks to be just as massive as its predecessor, but that level of ambition carries a price. Today, Obsidian announced that the sequel's release is slipping from April to May, as the team works on polishing the game.

The delay puts its release at a little more than a month beyond what was previously announced. Deadfire was originally slated for an April 3 launch, but now it will be coming to PC, Mac, and Linux on May 8. Console versions will be coming later this year.

Valve Announces Dota Plus Subscription Service For Dota 2
Mar 12, 2018 - 11:19 AM - by Emabulator

Valve has announced the Dota Plus subscription service for its MOBA Dota 2.

Today’s update unveils Dota Plus, a new monthly subscription service designed to help you get the most out of every match you play.

Dota Plus is an evolution of the Battle Pass. In the past we released two types of Battle Passes, ones that revolved around the Majors, and one around The International. As a result of the recent introduction of the Pro Circuit, we’ve replaced the Majors Battle Passes with a new type of service that doesn’t depend on a specific start and end date, and one that we can continually add features and content to over time.

This reimagining of the Majors Battle Pass will be an ongoing, uninterrupted service filled with features that provide both progression and opportunities for improvement. Hero Leveling offers you a way to make progress every match while earning Shards, a new currency that can be used to unlock rewards. Test your skills by completing hundreds of new Challenges of varying difficulties. Use the Plus Assistant to help you make build decisions by utilizing real-time item and ability suggestions. These suggestions are based on data gathered from millions of recent games at each skill bracket, ensuring your builds stay current in the ever-evolving meta. Better understand your playstyle by using new graphs and analysis tools both during the match and after it’s finished.

This update also includes the return of the Battle Cup. All Dota Plus members will have free weekly access to play in the weekend tournaments, while non-members can still purchase tickets for $0.99 to participate.

Everything Dota Plus has to offer is available now for $3.99 per month. Receive a discount if you sign up for a six- or twelve-month subscription. Want to gift Dota Plus to a friend? You can purchase gift memberships that will remain active for a fixed number of months.

Check out the Dota Plus page for more information on all of the features included in your subscription.

Shadow of the Colossus Update Developer Bluepoint's Next Game is Another Remake
Mar 12, 2018 - 11:02 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer is reporting that Bluepoint Games, the developer behind the recent Shadow of the Colossus remake, is working on another remake.

Bluepoint Games has confirmed that its next project in the wake of the stunning Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 4 is a new remake. Digital Foundry had the opportunity to talk with the team about the technology powering its latest release, and asked whether the expanded art team brought on for the project would be deployed next on an original game.

"Well, we could but we're doing another remake," replied Bluepoint's president and co-owner, Marco Thrush. "This project served us as a great point of growing the art team to the point where we can take on a full triple-A game major scope of art content. So now our next step is, let's improve the art pipeline, let's improve the engine, let's improve workflow for artists, let's grow on the art side some more to handle our next project because it's a bit bigger. And our next focus is, all right, let's work on design and add new stuff to get to the next remake, because now that can be our sole focus of making sure that's where we put the time and everybody else, they're already at a level where we can perform."

Bluepoint's strategy in expansion has involved growing over time to meet the needs of each new title, but there's the sense now from our conversation that the studio has evolved to point where it's close to being able to tackle any kind of project that's thrown at it.

"With Shadow [of the Colossus], the studio most definitely grew in both number of people and skill level - and so we continue to grow and expand and look at areas of weakness," said Peter Dalton, Bluepoint's technical director. "One area that we've not explored very deeply is, 'What does our design prowess looks like? What is our ability to build something original and to expand it, rather than just upgrading something?' and so we look at those things and we are constantly trying to enhance and strengthen the studio to get to a point where, yeah, doing original development or whatever comes our way, we're fully capable of doing it."

Fortnite Cross-Play is Coming to Xbox One, PC, Mac and iOS
Mar 12, 2018 - 7:52 AM - by Emabulator

Epic Games has announced that Fortnite cross-play is coming between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and eventually Android.

We’re happy to announce today that in partnership with our friends at Microsoft, Fortnite will feature cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase, between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and (in the next few months) Android.

Contrary to what may have been implied, Microsoft has long been a leading voice in supporting cross-platform play, connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles. We’ve been working together with them over the last several months to make this possible, and will bring this functionality to Fortnite players on Xbox right along with other platforms.

With each new platform we support and every update we ship, we strive to bring Fortnite to more people, and make it easier to play together with friends. And, as always, cross-play is opt in.

As we shared a few days ago, starting Monday you can sign-up for the Fortnite Invite Event on iOS. On phones and tablets, Fortnite is the same 100-player game you know from Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Mac. Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates.

"Valve is Going to Start Shipping Games Again."
Mar 09, 2018 - 6:48 AM - by Chimpbot

While speaking at a press presentation for shipping new games. They won't simply be focusing on software, however; hardware will also be key to their future development.

"Artifact is the first of several games that are going to be coming from us, so that’s sort of good news. Hurray! Valve is going to start shipping games again."

"We aren’t going to be talking about it today," continued Newell, "but sort of the big thing that, the new era we have in our quiver really is the ability to develop hardware and software simultaneously."

Newell compared the approach to that of Nintendo, who often work to match their hardware and software:

"We’ve always been a little bit jealous of companies like Nintendo. When Miyamoto is sitting down thinking about the next version of Zelda or Mario he’s thinking what is the controller going to look like, what sort of graphics and other capabilities, and he can introduce new capabilities like motion input because he controls both of those things.

"And he can make the hardware look as good as possible because he’s designing the software at the same time that’s really going to take advantage of that. That’s something we’ve been jealous of and that’s something that you’ll see us taking advantage of subsequently."
While we have yet to see what this new hardware-based approach will end up looking like, it will be interesting to see how a PC developer takes on a Nintendo-like approach in the coming years. Still, it's good to know that there will be more coming out of Valve than just a card game based on DOTA2.

Report: The Joker Will Be Failed '80s Comedian In DC's Origin Movie
Mar 09, 2018 - 6:43 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has word that the Joker will be based on Bob Saget, or something like that, in an origin movie. "Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly close to signing on as the Clown Prince of Crime."

While Jared Leto's portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad didn't meet with universal acclaim from fans, it was assumed that the actor would continue playing the iconic villain in future DC movies. So the news that the studio was planning a film that would focus on the Joker's origins with a different actor came as surprise to many--including Leto himself. A few more details about the project have now emerged.

According to The Wrap, the movie will portray the Joker as a comedian in the 1980s, who takes up a life of crime after his stand-up career fails and he bombs with audiences. As the site notes, this makes sense of the involvement of producer Martin Scorsese, who dealt with similar material in his classic 1980s movie The King of Comedy.

The Joker origin movie will be directed by Todd Phillips, who is best known for the Hangover series. While no official casting announcements have been made yet, Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly close to signing on as the Clown Prince of Crime. The film doesn't have a release date, and although it is set to start shooting later this year, The Wrap's sources suggest that scripts rewrites could delay the start of production.

In terms of Leto's Joker, it is expected that he will return for Suicide Squad 2, which starts production this year. Beyond that, there have been rumors of a movie focusing purely on the Joker and Harley Quinn--but like many potential DC projects, this is far from a sure thing.

Jon Favreau to Executive Produce and Write Live-Action Star Wars Series
Mar 08, 2018 - 11:04 AM - by Emabulator

Lucasfilm has announced that Iron Man director Jon Favreau will executive produce and write its upcoming live-action Star Wars series.

Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars series for Disney’s new direct-to-consumer platform. Favreau is no stranger to the Star Wars galaxy having played roles in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Favreau is thrilled to be returning to the Star Wars galaxy: “If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

Disney’s collaborations with Favreau extend back a decade, when he helped launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe as director of Iron Man and Iron Man 2 and as an executive producer of the Iron Man and Avengers films for Marvel Studios. For Disney, he directed and produced the massively successful The Jungle Book, which won an Academy Award for its groundbreaking visual effects. He is currently in production on Disney’s highly anticipated reimagining of The Lion King, set for release in 2019.

The untitled Star Wars live-action series does not yet have a release date.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Confirmed
Mar 08, 2018 - 10:52 AM - by Emabulator

Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will indeed be the next title in the series. PC Gamer has the story.

The rumor that surfaced earlier this week is now officially true: The next game in the Call of Duty series will be Black Ops 4, it's being developed by Treyarch, and it's coming on October 12.

Alas, if you were expecting more in the way of detail, I'm afraid you're in for a disappointment. Aside from the title, the developer, and the date, Activision has said nothing more about it, and it's quite possible that it's only saying this much because of the leak. A full and proper reveal will take place during a community event scheduled for May 17—which will include, I hope, an explanation for the use of tally marks (IIII) instead of regular Roman numerals. Maybe it's like a clock?

The Hollywood Reporter has word that a Sopranos prequel movie is in the works.

David Chase will be returning to the world of the Sopranos for a feature prequel.

New Line has purchased the screenplay The Many Saints of Newark, which Chase co-wrote with Sopranos writer Lawrence Konner.

The story is in the era of the Newark riots in the '60s, when African-Americans and Italians of New Jersey were at each other's throats, and among the gangsters of each group, it became lethal.

While other plot details are currently sleeping with the fishes, some fan favorite Sopranos characters will be seen in the film. A search for a director is under way.

Chase will serve as producer via his Chase Films banner. Chase Films' Nicole Lambert will serve as an exec producer.

The Division 2 Announced
Mar 08, 2018 - 8:52 AM - by Evil Avatar

An Announcement from Massive Entertainment on The Division 2

What an incredible few years it’s been for the team here at Massive! When we first began work on Tom Clancy’s The Division, we knew we had something special and something we believed in so strongly that we wanted to make sure we got it right. We also knew we couldn’t achieve that goal without your help.

Since the launch of The Division two years ago, we’ve remained focused on this philosophy. We continue to create more opportunities to interact directly with livestreams, ongoing surveys, and social media. We also introduced public test servers as a way of getting immediate feedback before integrating major features and changes into the game. We’ve never stopped wanting to make The Division better and our most recent 1.8 update is a testament to that, as seen from your overwhelming feedback and support.

All of these new features and experiences have made our team better, too. We’re nimbler and better prepared to take action based on feedback. And now, more than ever before, we have a clear vision of what’s important and what continues to make The Division a special experience for so many people. Following our Year 2 anniversary celebration, we’re going to keep supporting that experience with new title updates that will bring new Global Events, Xbox One X enhancements, and more.

That said, we’ve always envisioned the story in the game we launched in 2016 as the beginning chapter in a larger saga, and today we’re excited to share more info about what’s next for The Division universe.

We’re thrilled to announce that we are working on Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, and that development will be led by Massive Entertainment in collaboration with Ubisoft Reflections, Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft Annecy, Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Bucharest. The Division 2 will be powered by an updated version of the Snowdrop engine that enables us to realize our ambitions for the sequel, but more importantly, we’re also taking everything we learned over the past two years and applying it towards the sequel to make sure we get it right.

Part of that means recognizing your commitment to The Division. With that in mind, we’re adding a new type of achievement called “Shields” to the game. Earning them will unlock special rewards in The Division 2 when it launches.

On behalf of all the teams at Ubisoft, we thank you for the support you’ve given us over the past two years, and we hope that our continued work will earn that support for many years to come. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store for The Division 2 at E3 2018 in June. See you then!”

Julian Gerighty - Creative Director, Massive Entertainment

The Division is here to fix all of the mistakes made by the first team that they have had over a year to fix and have mostly ignored. So, enjoy???

"No freakin' way!!!" will God of War have Microtransactions in it
Mar 07, 2018 - 9:43 AM - by Emabulator

The Twitter detectives at Eurogamer have dug up some good news on Sony Santa Monica's highly anticipated PS4 game, God of War. There's "No freakin' way!!!" it will have microtransactions.

A screenshot showing a kind of currency in God of War sparked fears the new PlayStation 4 game will have microtransactions. It wouldn't be the only single-player blockbuster with them after all - I'm looking at you Middle-oeuf: Shadow of War and Assassin's Creed: Oranges.

The question was put to God of War director Cory Barlog on Twitter, to which he responded, unequivocally, "No freakin way!!!"

Report: Diablo III is Coming to Nintendo Switch
Mar 06, 2018 - 4:38 PM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer is reporting that Blizzard has a Nintendo Switch port of Diablo III in the works.

Last week, Blizzard set tongues wagging with an apparent tease for a Diablo game on Nintendo Switch. The image - of a Diablo night light being repeatedly switched on and off - felt fairly deliberate.

But then, after hours of fan excitement, an official response emerged from within Blizzard apparently designed to dampen down the flames: "As of now, we do not have any current plans to announce Diablo for Switch," a spokesperson told us.

So, what's going on? Well, while Blizzard makes its mind up, Eurogamer sources have told us that yes - the project is very much in production. And as you might expect, the game will be a port of Diablo 3.

Our sources could not confirm whether the game's Reaper of Souls and Rise of the Necromancer expansions will be included - but at this point it would be surprising if they were not.

Dragon’s Crown Pro Characters Trailer
Mar 06, 2018 - 4:29 PM - by Evil Avatar

Amazon – Dauntless warriors who know no fear as they effortlessly wield their two-handed weapons. Their massive equipment delivers vicious blows that deal lethal damage to multiple foes at once. Lightly armored, they are agile fighters who rely on punishing kicks when unarmed.

Dwarf – Stocky fighters whose muscular frames permit them to wield a weapon in each hand. Their strength lets them pick up and throw anything in sight, even heavy foes. Throwing enemies lets them damage multiple foes with one fling, laying waste to an entire horde of adversaries.

Elf – A long-lived forest race who are often much older than they appear to human eyes. While slight of body, they are deadly masters of the bow and arrow, using their superior athleticism to fight nimbly and fearlessly from a distance.

Fighter – Experts in battle, outfitted with full-plate armor and a study shield. Boasting the stoutest defense of all classes, their shields can protect all allies in the nearby area. Their one-handed weapons have short reach, but they can swing them quickly, allowing them to make short work of nearby foes.

Mage – Bewitching women with knowledge of dark magic. They are weak of body, but the great knowledge they wield of the arcade arts cannot be ignored. Sorceresses can create delicious food, control skeletons, and turn foes into harmless frogs. A jack-of-all-trades support class, they can provide aid to their friends in countless ways.

Wizard – Male magicians who have a wealth of magic at their beck and call. Unable to fend off monsters with strength, they instead rely on their spells, and are vital assets for any adventure.
